England was downed 3-1 on penalty kicks by Portugal on Saturday, ending their World Cup run. Things went from bad to worse for the English side during the match: David Beckham was forced to leave the game just after halftime with a leg injury; and not 10 minutes later, Wayne Rooney was given a red card for stepping on a Portugese player's groin. Playing with only 10 men, England held Portugal to a 0-0 tie throughout regulation and the two overtime periods, but they finally lost 3-1 on penalties. It was the second time in two years that Portugal eliminated England from a major tournament on penalty kicks, having beaten them similarly in the 2004 European Championship quarterfinals.
