Born on April 23, 1896 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Elam Vangilder (Elam Russell Vangilder) played for the St. Louis Browns and Detroit Tigers over the course of his 11 year career. Vangilder broke into the bigs on September 18, 1919 with the St. Louis Browns, and put up a 5.50 ERA in 104.2 innings pitched in 1920, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Elam Vangilder's best season was 1922, when he posted a 3.42 ERA, won 19 games and struck out 63 batters.
