The latest installment of the Battle of Alberta was all Calgary as the Stampeders leveled the Edmonton Eskimos 28-3 at home on Friday night.

The Stampeders jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the opening quarter. Sandro DeAngelis kicked a 34-yard field goal for the game’s initial points, followed by a two-yard touchdown run by Gerald Commissiong. Receiver Nik Lewis added another on a six-yard run on a reverse play.

Former NFL quarterback Akili Smith was impressive in his CFL debut, engineering both touchdown drives. He completed 4 of 8 passes for 49 yards.

Henry Burris entered the game in the second quarter and the Stampeders continued to roll. Burris completed a 30-yard pass to Jeremaine Copeland, and three plays later, Joffrey Reynolds scored on a four-yard run. The Stampeders took a 23-3 lead into halftime.

Burris finished the game completing 6 of 7 passes for 72 yards. Copeland led all receivers with 114 yards on four catches.

Calgary added two more points in the third quarter on a conceded safety, and three more in the fourth quarter on another DeAngelis field goal. DeAngelis missed on a 20-yard field goal near the end of the game.

Edmonton’s lone points came off the foot of Sean Fleming on a 15-yard attempt.

Eskimos quarterback Steven Jyles, fighting to become Ricky Ray’s backup this season, was 7 of 16 passing for 70 yards, but was intercepted three times. Ray was 5 of 6 passing for 45 yards.

Calgary’s Wes Cates led all rushers with 60 yards on the ground.

The Stampeders ran the turf for 380 net yards, compared to Edmonton’s 164.

Notes: Edmonton Eskimos defensive lineman Adam Braidwood, lining up as a tight end, caught a 16-yard pass from Ricky Ray...Eskimos defensive lineman Brandon Guillory was taken off the field on a stretcher in the second quarter…the Eskimos have lost three straight pre-season games.
