After squandering a 20-point halftime lead to the Edmonton Eskimos last week, the Saskatchewan Roughriders built an even bigger advantage Saturday - and this one stuck.
Kerry Joseph threw for two touchdowns, ran two more in himself and the Roughriders took advantage of a flurry of Eskimo turnovers in a 54-14 whitewash.
Joseph finished the game just 12-for-20 for 162 yards, but he wasn't needed as Saskatchewan (3-2) scored 29 points off five Edmonton gaffes to earn a split of a home-and-home series with the Eskimos. The Roughriders atoned for last week's 21-20 loss in Edmonton (2-2-1), a game in which the Roughriders held a 20-1 lead at halftime.
The 'Riders got on the board midway through the first quarter after Jamie Boreham recovered a fumble off of his own punt. Joseph found Wes Cates on a 40-yard strike and completed the drive with a five-yard TD pass to Matt Dominguez.
The Eskimos lost the ball again after a Kyle Mitchell interception later in the quarter. Joseph promptly orchestrated an eight-play drive that ended with a 10-yard touchdown toss to Dominguez.
Edmonton showed some life in the second when Eskimos quarterback Ricky Ray connected with Trevor Gaylor on a 52-yard touchdown strike. But any momentum Edmonton had generated was gone for good five-and-a-half minutes later when Kyle Mitchell, in his first appearance this season, blocked a punt and returned the fumble 16 yards for a Roughriders touchdown.
A 78-yard interception return later near the end of the half led to a Joseph one-yard TD run, giving Saskatchewan a 34-8 advantage at the break.
A 'Rider defense leading the league in quarterback sacks struck again in the second half. Sean Lucas rocked Ray, forcing the ball loose. Kitwana Jones scooped it up and ran it in 15 yards for the score.
Ray, who went 17-for-28 for 199 yards, was replaced by Stefan LeFors later in the quarter. LeFors went 6-for-10 for 47 yards.
Joseph added his second TD run, a two-yard scamper, six minutes into the fourth quarter. He went to the sidelines shortly after in favour of backup Marcus Crandell.
Luca Congi made three of four field goals, while Sean Fleming was 2-for-3.
