Eddie The Eagle Flies to Sweden?

Ed Belfour, arguably the most insane goalie of the past 25 years in the NHL, is not going to return to the NHL. This is not, in and of itself, shocking, seeing as he is 97 years old (actually 42), and he has a shitty back. The Wings were going to sign him last season before he signed with Florida which just felt dirty…kind of like signing Chelios; but that one I liked then and still like now.

The crazy part is that he signed with a “second division club” in the Swedish Elite League.

Now I’m a big hockey fan, but I’ll admit I don’t know anything about the Swedish Elite League, but I do know it’s a far cry from the NHL. Belfour was a two time Vezina winner (90/91 and 92/93), a rookie of the year (1990/91). Isn’t this somewhat of a step back? The only time I’ve ever heard of players going over to European leagues is during a lockout/strike or when they aren’t good enough to crack a lineup. This should be a hint Eddie.

But then again we shouldn’t be shocked that Eddie The Eagle is doing something insane. Eddie once got into an argument with hotel security after they tried to break up a fight between him and a hooker and then offered the cops “one billion dollars” to let him free….classy. He followed that up a few years later by getting arrested for being drunk, which isn’t as funny as bribing cops with a billion after fighting with a hooker so lets move on.

Also we should note: Eddie owns an auto racing team and has a pilot’s license according to Wikipedia. So I guess all the Eddie The Eagle’s gonna fly jokes actually hold some truth.

Eddie, you along with Patrick Roy terrorized my childhood (along with Tim Cheveldae who was brutal). I don’t want to picture you decrepit old man slugging it out in the Swedish Elite League…can’t you just retire and bang puck bunnies the rest of your life while you count your millions?

Maybe he just loves to play the game, and wants to get out of the limelight? And 42 isn't old in hockey, as you say, Chelios is 45, and he's doing alright. But Eddie the Eagle?! Expect an article coming up explaining how awful it is that he has that nickname!

His nickname is never used (that I know of) as posted. He was called "The Eagle" or Eddie "The Eagle" Belfour

No, i've heard "Eddie the Eagles" numerous times...

secondly 42 is old for any major North American sport...chelios is an exception rather than the rule...

Plus, feel free to name other 42 year old goalies who haven't lost a step

JuT - Even at 37, I couldn't get back in the pipes, let alone 5 years from now.

Exactly...there are some exception athletes who can play beyond a relatively normal age...and a lot who can't...

Don't forget some of the players that have come to the NHL from the SEL and made an impact on the game: The Sedin twins, Peter Forsberg, Daniel Alfredsson, Mats Sundin among others. As far as it being a step back, the SEL is arguably the second best league in Europe behind the Russian Elite League, and the SEL has 77 former players in the NHL right now.

I think it's more the fact that it is a second tier team, rather than where he's playing. He ought to have played in Britain if he wanted the quieter life, there's next to no coverage, it would do wonders for the game over here (perhaps), and he would be able to speak the language.

True, Leksands was relegated after the Kvalserien in 2005/06 along with Södertälje SK, when IF Malmö Redhawks and Skellefteå AIK were promoted to play in Elitserien for season 2006-07. So, if Belfour can carry Leksands to some wins, they will get another crack at the Kvalserien to get out of the Allsvenskan and back to the SEL.

Eddie may be ready for to hang up the skates; but he also wanted to help promote the SEL. And he may be doing it the western capitalistic way - you want butts in the seats - get players on the ice. It may just be a great case of paying back those who helped you.

Ed has already been a stange bird. However, the time has come to retire. He had a great run, why embarass yourself over in Europe?
