Ed Rate (Edwin Schellhase Rate) was born on May 27, 1899 in Canton, Ohio. After going to high school at McKinley (Canton, OH), Rate attended Purdue University. Rate made his professional debut in the NFL in 1923 with the Milwaukee Badgers. He played for the Milwaukee Badgers for his entire 1 year career.
