Ed McKean (Edwin John McKean) was born on June 6, 1864 in Grafton, Ohio. He made his Major League debut on April 16, 1887 for the Cleveland Spiders. In 1887, his rookie year, he hit .286 with 2 home runs and 54 RBI. McKean played for the Cleveland Spiders and St. Louis Perfectos over the course of his 13 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was Ed McKean's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1894, when he stole 33 bases, hit for a .357 average and knocked in 128 runs. However, others believe that it was 1887, when he stole 76 bases, hit for a .286 average and knocked in 54 runs.
