Ed Beatty (Edward Marshall Beatty, Jr.) was born on April 6, 1932 in Clarksdale, Mississippi. After going to high school at Tiptonville (TN), Beatty attended the University of Mississippi. Beatty made his professional debut in the NFL in 1955 with the San Francisco 49ers. He played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers and Washington Redskins over the course of his 7 year career.

Most people believe that 1956 was Ed Beatty's best year, as he recovered 5 opponents fumbles.
