Earned run average

Earned run average, often abbreviated "ERA," is a metric used to determine how well a baseball pitcher performs. It is calculated by taking the runs given up by the pitcher, dividing them by his innings pitched, and multiplying the total by 9. It is multiplied by 9 to approximate the number of runs the pitcher would give up over the course of a complete game.
