Early NHL 2006-2007 Predictions, Part 3: The Playoffs

by user Madproof9

It seems my picks in these early predictions are really making some people mad, and I like it, it makes for good arguments. So, without further ado, it's time to spark some more arguments by making my Stanley Cup playoff predictions.

It's very hard to predict playoffs, as if one match is out, the whole series' of series can be out.

I know, but I figured I tried the regular season stuff, and like everyone arguing with me, so I might as well go ahead and do that whole season. It's true though, if one of the teams doesn't make the playoffs the whole thing is screwed up.

Did the heat get to you, or have you been smoking the wacky tobacco and drinking some Kool Aid? Ok, I can see the Sabres going deep into the playoffs. But the Devils in the 2nd rd? Come on, the team is $2M over the cap and they still have Gionta and GOmz to sign. They ain't going anywhere. I have gone on the record and said it is likely that the Flyers will miss the playoffs this year. But the real kicker is the Ducks in the semi-finals and the Blues as the #2 seed in the West. Drop the Blues to 7 or 8th, and put your money on the Flames, and then, this becomes a pretty good prediction.

Chistof just so you know Gionta skipped the Arbitration process so that means instead of getting a huge 1 year deal for the 48 goals he scored he will most likely sign a long term multi-year deal so you can pretty much count him as signed and it leaves gomez who did arbitration because he had another career year and wants to get PAID.and i don't think that if you are 2 million over the cap (which they are not)that would mean you don't make the playoffs. the devils are currently (and i used a calculator) 43.9 million owed and the NHl cap is 44 million. yes signing gionta and gomez will put them over but that is why Lamoriello is always looked at for being a great GM and getting the best team on the ice.

The Devils will not be able to afford any injuries this season. If they do, that will push them over the cap. Lou may be a great GM, but the cap will come down hard on this team. Just you wait and see. . . .

If a player is injured, their salary doesn't count against the cap, so the team can go out and sign someone else without going over the cap.

How do you figure that the Blues will get into the playoffs, but the Wings won't? Sure they may not be as strong as they were last season in the regular season, but they will be in the top 8 barring some unseen injury to Zetterberg, Lidstrom, or Datsyuk.

It's not maybe you'll be wrong Madproof, you WILL be wrong. There is no way the Blues make the playoffs and the Wings don't. Cellar Dwellers like last years Blues don't drive to the top that fast, and dynastys like the Wings don't drop off after a few losses.

Oh, so those Cellar dwellers don't make the playoffs the next year? Strange, considering the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes finished last in their division 2 years prior to winning the cup, and didn't even make the playoffs the year before. Oh yeah, and those Calgary Flames who made it to the Stanley Cup Finals against Tampa Bay, they missed the playoffs 7 straight years before that, finishing in last place the year before they made it to the finals. Oh, yeah, I forgot about the Oilers, who didn't even make the playoffs in 04/05 year... Yep, what about the Anaheim Ducks, who finished in last place in THREE STRAIGHT YEARS before making it to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals... should I keep going?

you guys should not underestimate the canadians. they are a very good team. if you follow a littlebit hockey you would know that with the goalie and the team (not injured) they had in the 2nd half of the season last year, they were in the top five teams in the nhl. and if you look what happened in the playoffs, carolina deserved in totallity their cup however they were extremely lucky to take off montreal in the first round. although it's part of the game and good for the canes. this said, montreal have the same team they had in the 2nd half of the season with samsonov and johnson added and zednik bulis and sundstrum (not helping the team) out. so i think montreal should be a real threat next season and even in the playoffs, may be not the cup but not to far away.

Give more credit to the Ducks on this one. Yes, Buffalo has returns on their stars. But the ducks not only gained a fantastic D-line with pronger, but Perry, Getzlaf, Kunitz and Penner will all have had another full season to warm up. And if they blossomed like they did with only a half season of NHL under their belt last year, they'll be fierce in the upcoming season and playoffs. And if they trade Jiggy, hopefully for a big left wing, they'll be a powerhouse.

Give more credit to the Flyers. It may not seem like they'll do well, but, think about this. Who was the best team at the midway point of the last season? True, we haven't gotten many new players, so shouldn't we be contenders at least at the halfway mark. Also, the Flyers demolished the Senators in almost every game we played them in, there is a psychological disadvantage for the Sen's in those matches and I have no fear of playing them in the playoffs. The idea that Buffalo will be the Hurricanes is not too farfetched, but THEM beating the SEN'S is. I'm not saying the Flyers will win the Cup, but I do want to bring up the fact that they're being wholly underestimated. Forsberg, Gagne, Knuble, sounds like a good first line, eh? Not makin' the playoffs. Bah.

I believe the author of that message failed to grasp that the Habs fans refer to Cristobal Huet when they speak of their team's goaltending. We traded Theodore for Aebisher just to get rid of his 5M contract (and mostly of his disastrous efficency rate). I'm truly sorry for you guys!

I like a lot of your predictions and have a few of my own to put in. Buffalo will have a great regular season, they'll trade Biron by the midpoint to replace Connolly whom won't return successfully from post concussion syndrome. They'll make the playoffs and be upset 2nd or 3rd round because Miller has let his own hype get to him (but will be a better goalie down the road because of it). Briere will fail to repeat and Afinogenov will prove to the entire world that he was a one year wonder and will go the way of Alexander Mogilny.

Cristobal Huet will come crashing back down to earth because Kipper he most certainly is not and Aebescher will take them to the 2nd round but no further. Koivu will unfortunately not recover completely from his eye injury and Ribiero will continue to miss the net from 5 feet out and be about as useful as an overpriced bag of pucks. Biggest bright spots will be the meshing of Kovalev and Samsonov.

Wings will make the post-season. They will have to ride Osgood for more than 50 games due to another injury to Hasek. Osgood will be respectable, but the heart is gone from that team and they've got too many peripheral players (exception Holmstrom) and their defense will start to show their age. Only reason they make the playoffs? It's easy! Detroit gets to play in the tyke division of the NHL! They get to play 24 games against the likes of St.Louis (Legace will take at least 4 games from the wings though), Columbus (traded their starting goaltender away... HAH!), and Chicago (Havlat will be hurt again and Khabibulin is washed up). Detoit barely makes it into the dance and is out without a whimper. Lidstom will captain the team well but become frustrated. He's good... but Yzerman he is not.

Ottawa will have a fine reg season, but will not make it deep because Gerber doesn't have the ability to carry a team deep in the playoffs and Emerey will not benefit from sitting out most of the year. That and Alfredsson + Playoffs = well... nothing good. 1st or second round exit for Ottawa (again)

Ranger's will bust because of question marks in the crease after a sophmore slump by Lundqvist and an unenlightened campaign by Mr. Jagr. Miss the playoffs. Plus they have too many soft players... even for the softest conference in hockey.

Biggest 'surprise' out of the West will be the 50+ goals scored by Gaborik with Minnesota finishing in the top 4 of the conference. They'll make it to the Western Conference semi final.

San Jose won't make the playoffs though Thornton will repeat as the Art Ross winner with Cheechoo coming close to winning the Richard. They'll find out that both their goaltenders are riddled with holes as more and more snipers take advantage of Toskala's twitchy glove hand and Nabokov's inconsistency.

The Ducks will not beat the Flames again in the playoffs. Yes they have Niedermeyer and Pronger, but that will prove to be their achilles heel against the Flames. The Oil relied on Pronger qutie a bit during the regular season and look how much that helped them against the Flames. Biggest reason they will not go deep is their swiss cheese goaltending.

I agree putting Calgary at the top of the division because of these factors.

Jeff Friesen is a huge upgrade over Shaun Donovan. Donovan had speed, heart and grit, but hands of stone. Friesen will surprise with a 20+ goal campaign (more if he winds up on the left wing of the Iginla line). Tanguay and Iginla will mesh quite well as Tanguay plays like Marc Savard (though Tanguay can actually skate where Savard can't). Iggy will pot 60+ this year. Out with Jordan Leopold and in with the talented and under-rated Zyuzin. Calgary has a bonafied puck moving d-man. Calgary will again have the lowest GAA in the league due to Kipper and the best D in the league. Why do I say best D? Imagine if you could cross breed hockey players skills like you could dogs. Imagine then crossing Scott Stevens' bone crushing hits, Ray Bourque's all around defensive capabilities with Al Iafrate's shot (I'd like to say McInnis, but no one will ever shoot the puck like him again). Then imagine having this conglomeration score 20 goals in his rookie season, play through 7 games in the playoffs with a broken foot and have everyone in the hockey world forget that he's just 20 years old (turned 21 in April)... Enter Dion Phaneuf... anyone who doesn't agree, just watch the kid play hockey. Oh, and Playfair will let the team be a bit more free on offense while Sutter works his magic behind the scenes.

Calgary will come out on top in the west.

Jersey will come out on top in the east.

Stanley cup final goes 7 games with the 2 best goaltenders in the world with Calgary winning the final game by a single goal (scored by Friesen of course).

Cheers! And here's to a fine NHL campaign.

Not looking for respect there #8, nor do I have too much time on my hands, I just love hockey. I'm sure that I was able to write all of that in the time that you wrote your unintelligent response. Definitely not knocking the Sabres, I just think that Ryan Miller is too high on himself. Granted a goal tender needs to be cocky and egotistical (see Patrick Roy) but I think he's taken it too far. I think that a Sophmore slump will get him in the playoffs this year, but he will learn from that, take it down a notch and become a true franchise goaltender who will perenially challenge for the Vezina trophy. The Sabres are a well balanced team no doubt, I just fell they need 1 or 2 more pieces to pull the whole puzzle together. They're pretty much going through what happened to them before Scotty Bowman took over as GM and head coach. A promising team that played well, but didn't have the tools to go all the way.

And yes, I do know 'things' as you put it, I've been playing hockey since I could walk, watching since I could understand how to change the channel. Just because my opinions don't mesh with yours doesn't make them ridiculous, just different. My opinions are definitely biased towards my team, but again... not ridiculous, just mine. You don't like them? Oh, well... I won't lose any sleep. Oh, and by the by, for the Sabre's being "America's" underdog team?

Here's the roster breakdown for you...

Canada 34.78% USA 21.74% Czech 13.04% Russia 8.70% Finland 8.70% Sweden 4.35% Austira 4.35% Germany 4.35%

Totals 100.01% (due to rounding of percentages) All taken from Sabres.com official website. Looks like over a 3rd of your team is Canadian... perhaps they should then be Canada's underdog team?

By the sabres needing 1 or 2 more pieces to make the puzzle work, is he talking about Spacek and whoever the sabres get for Biron? And by the way, Ryan Miller is the most humble athlete I've ever heard interview. Example; he never said one negative thing about team USA's decision to pass on him as their golaie last year. Good call USA. Sabres win the cup this year. shut up!

You give far too much credit to Spacek, sure he was decent in the playoffs, but not great. The most important stat for a defenceman in the playoffs is +/- and Spacek was a -3 after 24 games. Seems he was more of the reason the Oil lost than a reason they got as far as they did. I'm sure Biron will bring in something good, but that'll be to replace Connolly so it won't be an improvement over what they already have. It was a "good call USA" 'cause you should have to earn your way to the Olympics... I mean Miller had 10 games of NHL experience when the Olympics came up. Same reason Canada didn't take Crosby. I can give you a whole list of goaltenders that played phenomenally in their rookie seasons then bombed in their sophmore campaign, so you should really wait and see before you tell me to shut up. And if you want a humble athlete to interview, look at Jarome.

I really don't see how anyone can say that Ryan Miller is high on himself. Living in Buffalo (GO SABRES!!) I saw a multitude of interviews that he gave last year, and I have to tell you that I never once thought of him as egotistical or cocky. Rather, he seems to be a fairly down to earth, team player. The whole team is like that. THat, my friends, is what makes them so good. Because they are a team. They're not a few stars looking for personal glory. They are a group of individuals working together. That's why they did so well last year, and I have fervent hope that that will continue this season. Seeing as how they were able to keep most of the team together, I think that we will see some brilliant things from them this year.

"It was a "good call USA" 'cause you should have to earn your way to the Olympics... I mean Miller had 10 games of NHL experience when the Olympics came up." Umm, I hate to point this out...but when USA won the gold in 1980, the team had a combined 0 games with the NHL. The Olympics are not supposed to be based on "paying your dues" or how much professional experience you have. THe Olympics are about watching the best athletes compete. By not including Ryan Miller on the team, we did NOT see the best athletes compete. And it showed.

You are very right in saying that the Olympics are not about paying your dues, and they shouldn't be. Back in 1980 that is... I seem to recall that the Olympics were an amateur event back then. Now that the teams are comprised of professional athletes, my opinion is that you should prove yourself professionaly before you even think about stepping onto the world stage. Ovechkin played for Russia's big team on the international stage for a good many years before he came to the NHL so he was a logical inclusion, same to be said of Malkin. Miller hadn't done anything outside of playing a few games in the NHL and playing for Junior level teams. I don't disagree with your argument about Miller being the best Americain-born tender (he's head and shoulders above DiPietro) I just think that to host something on a world scale with professional athletes, you should pay your dues first. My saying that he's high on himself stems from the fact that he felt he should have been there automatically, without having first proved himself. He very much did that in the playoffs last year and I would say he's payed his dues in full now.

I don't see why you're saying that he felt that he should have been there automatically. Every time he was questioned about it he said that he would have liked to have gone, but he understood why they didn't choose him, because of his lack of experience. There are a lot of people who said that he should have been picked regardless, but he wasn't one of them. It seems to me as though you are attributing other people's sentiments to him. And you know what, deep down, privately, he probably does think that he should have been picked, but I bet that most of the guys in the NHL think that they should have gone to the Olympics. You don't become a professional athlete because you're so humble and hate the spotlight. But never once did I ever hear Ryan Miller say that he should have been picked.

Pominville is showing he is not a fluke...and notice how the players the Sabres put on waivers were picked up immeditalty? The Rochester Americans are one of the best teams in the AHL and that is where the Sabres draw from their pool of talent. who made these stupid predictions of the playoffs, wheres calgary, i dont see them in 1st in the west and the red wings not even one of your playoff teams. the canucks were gona suck eh!! look at them now , luongo is just gona get better and the team has already adapted to there new defensive play already from there old offensive style of play. canucks might not win the cup even though there my team but i know for a fact that the west will win the cup because all the teams right now that look like they are going to be in the playoffs dont wanna pick a team they prefer to play against because THERE ALL GREAT TEAMS and buffalo is going to make the finals because they east is weaker and 6 of the 8 playoff teams suck compare to the one in the west. if stlouis was in the eastern conference they would be in the playoff hunt. CANUCKS ALL THE WAY

the west is way harder to predic, for example, last year playoffs the top 4 seeded teams were knocked off in the 1st round, in the second round, 1 of the 2 top seeded teams got knocked out, and in the 3rd round the 8th place team was against the 6 place team and the 8th place team went to the stanley cup finals losing just buy 1 game .

i think tha last two cups have been rigged cause tampa bay is not a real hockey team and they beat a hardcore canadian team in calgary , then the next playoffs carolina beats edmonton in 7 games AGAIN and they win the cup and carolina is not a hockey city, what is it gona be this year, atlanta vs vancouver!!! will see, and if that appens and atlanta does make it to the finals, the nhl is so F*@$*& UP. WE ALL NOE VANCOUVER CAN KICK ATLANTAS ASS

It's hilarious that the original poster didn't even include the Wings in the PLAYOFFS. It's apparent he had a hard-on for Legace, haha.

While I thought the Wings wouldn't clinch the conference, having Hasek, Datsyuk, Lidstrom, and Zetterberg indicated they'd at least make in to the playoffs.

However, although I am a die-hard Wings fan, I don't see them making it past the second round this year. They can't consistently produce substantial offense, and the frantic, competitive nature of the playoffs will render their puck-possession strategy less viable (as it has done in the past two playoffs). Likewise, their shut-down defense won't have an easy time given the brutal checking in the playoffs. Unfortunately, the Wings have few clutch players in the offensive category. Unless Bertuzzi or Calder can instill something new (they were added largely to counter the lethargic, anti-grit style the Wings have come to be known for since the Grind Line was disbanded), I see the Wings floundering yet again. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Hasek go down with an injury (or three) if the Wings go into the second or third round.

I think the Ducks and the Sharks will do well in the West.

I predict Ducks vs. Sabres, Sabres in 5 for the Cup.

Oh, and I'd just like to add that the poster did an amazing job in predicting the Cup finalists considering how early he gave the prediction. Well done.

I saw it. The Wings dominated. They were more physical in that game than I have seen them since the 90s. It was wonderful.
