Although I have been told it might be a little early to predict the NHL season, I will continue anyway to make my predictions for the upcoming 2006-2007 NHL season, today highlighting the Eastern Conference.

Eastern Conference

Atlantic Division

New Jersey Devils

Philadelphia Flyers

New York Rangers

New York Islanders

Pittsburgh Penguins

Probably the craziest finish in the NHL last season, with the New York Rangers holding the division title until the very last games of the season, and then seeing it drift away as the Devils won 10 straight to finish the season one point better. The Devils are the Eastern Conference since 1995. I don't know how to put that any other way. Three cups, 4 trips to the finals, and 6 division championships in the last 10 years, they have been the most consistently dominate team in the division and the conference, and will continue to be the divisions powerhouse. I think the Flyers will take second by more than one point, having dropped Donald Brashear, who isn't needed as much in the new NHL, and having a healthy Peter Forsberg(at least he is healthy right now, and expected to be ready for the first game of the season). The Rangers will come in a close third, and then the Islanders in 4th, as the Penguins haven't made a huge improvement from their awful season last year.

Northeast Division

Buffalo Sabres

Ottawa Senators

Montreal Canadiens

Toronto Maple Leafs

Boston Bruins

Buffalo was one game - one period - away from the Stanley Cup Finals, where they would have done the same thing Carolina did to Edmonton. Beat them. The Sabres are returning almost all of their line-up from last season, and the good thing for them is, they had one of the lowest payrolls in the league last year, meaning they can give huge pay-raises to their deserving stars, and still be well under the cap. Ottawa should be able to compete, not as well as last year, but still make the playoffs easily. Toronto and Montreal were neck-and-neck until the end of the season, I see that happening once again, but Montreal coming out on top again. Sorry Boston, I think it'll be the cellar for you again.

Southeast Division

Carolina Hurricanes

Tampa Bay Lightning

Florida Panthers

Atlanta Thrashers

Washington Capitals

The defending champions will outright dominate this division again. It's not the strongest division in the NHL, and the Hurricanes are too good for the other four teams. However, as weak of a division that it may be, you still have to remember that the division is home to the last two Stanley Cup champs. Even though it seems like Tampa Bay's victory was long ago, they were actually the reining Stanley Cup champions until a month ago. They made a good acquisition in goaltender Marc Denis, and have Brad Richards, Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis all locked up, which should lead them into the playoffs once again. The Panthers were edged out by Atlanta last season, I think it'll switch up this season, and the Capitals are making stupid moves signing enforcers like Donald Brashear in a league that is now dominated by speed and goal scoring. They are living in the past, and that will keep them at the bottom

Playoff Seeds

1) Buffalo Sabres

2) Carolina Hurricanes

3) New Jersey Devils

4) Ottawa Senators

5) Philadelphia Flyers

6) Montreal Canadiens

7) Tampa Bay Lightning

8) New York Rangers

Playoff predictions are next.

I can see the Rangers making the playoffs easier than the 8th seed suggests, I'm just not sure if Lunqvist can be relied upon when they get there.

Flyers have serious issues. The team still lacks speed. The team has a major golaie controversy brewing. The team has serious health issues with Primeau and Forsberg. It is quite possible for the Flyers to blow up this season and completely miss the playoffs.

I can't see Florida - who traded away the best goalie they've ever had - getting in the 4th spot of their divison, let alone third. Whereas the Thrashers - who were in the race right until the end last year - should still compete, espicially with the Lightining.

The Panthers were less than 3 games back from the Thrashers last season. I don't know if you can call him the best goalie Florida has ever had, he was there 5 years and didn't make the playoffs one time. I'm going to have to say John Vanbiesbrouck it the Panthers best goalie ever. He has the team records for Goals Agaist Average, back in the day when goals were still scored frequently (not including last year), and led his team to the Stanley Cup Finals, where one game he stopped over 60 straight shots before letting a goal in. That's a good goaltender.

Although New Jersey may be a decent team, I find it hard to believe that they will be anything close to a powerhouse this year. Due to the Salary Cap they have to slide Scott Gomez, Brian Gionta and David Hale into something like 2 million dollars. I find it hard to believe that lacking these two players, the Devils will succeed. Also, the Flyers may have speed problems, but they helped themselves out with getting a fast defenseman (Nolan Baumgartner) and Geoff Sanderson in left wing. If Gagne is signed, the Flyers are not necessarily a slow team, just not a particularly fast team. I do think, however, that the Flyers will not "blow up" and will be the main rival of New York (Rangers) for the head of the Atlantic Division. New Jersey will sink to 3rd, while the Pen's will remain bottom feeders. In the Atlantic, its the Rag's or Flyguys.

i belive that the toronto maple leafs will make it to the playoffs (barely). They have improved there d-fence quite a bit ( kubina, gil, kaberle, mccabe, whatever young guys they bring in)and there offence wasnt terrible. peca will add some nice offensive/ defensive depth and if they can get anson carter like rumors say they should do well. darcy tucker and peca will be great. there both really hard workers and have good leadership. if mats sundin can not get injured and play like he did towards the end of the year and if raycroft cplays well i can see the leafs going 41-36-5.. making the playoffs in the 7th or 8th seed. theyll have to play better against the sens and theyll be fine. Well The leafs did improve there team quite a bit on the D side, but seriously they still have issues in goal. Signing Raycroft could be a smart move.....could be. Also the Sens have lost there best defencemen (Chara) and a top four guy in Havlat. The sens are like the Canucks of years gone by, way over rated. The Flyers won't have any issues if Forsberg is healthy....Gagne does crap without forsberg. The Sabres will finish top there division and loose the cup to the ducks. The devils will be alright because of lou, but the Rangers will surpass them because they signed two former role players from the canes and have shanny that can still net 40. goals. My HABS will be the same old same old depending on the goalie while keeping there fans bitting there nails all the way to the playoffs.

goals a night they wil never play five hundred hockey.

The Habs will be the same old same old making 7th or 8th seed. They don't have the right mix yet.. and forget about samsonov he is just another speed demon that won't finish for montreal. Notice when a really good player goes to montreal they suck and when they get traded they turn into a semi-superstar overnight (ex. John Leclair, Darcy Tucker)

Sabres might need some getting used to the loss of Jay Mckee, but they should have no trouble of making the playoffs and possibly winning the division/conference. All I know is that last year was their year and carolina still could not handle them with bufalo's three key defenders and Connoly out. Imagine how they would have done with no injuries. Carolina is a joke team that area does not know what hockey is, they couln't even sell out their eastern conference final home games until the day of. That is just sad. Don't put a hockey team in a land of rednecks! The sharks should of had the western conference easily. Sabres all the way.

I don't think the Rangers are going anywhere this year, their offence being Jagr and friends, period. Same with Devils, Tampa, Philadelphia : teams are incomplete. Not sure about Atlanta and Florida, especially the former. The Bruins have definitly improved and should finish ahead of Toronto. Sabres, Canes, Canadiens and Senators will compete for first place, really hard to tell. Senators are decimated. I'd say the Sabres might have more leadership (but they haven't signed Miller so far), yet above personal fanatism I'm expecting Montreal to have a great year finishing in top five of conference. Young players are oustanding, goaltending too, coaching staff is great(Carbo!): lets just see what the samsonov-ribeiro-kovalev will do now.

NJ is gonna lose somebody with the current Gionta predicament. They are squeezed for cap space (they went over 44 mill. when signing Gomez)and have to drop a major cap consumer to sign Gionta, David Hale and somebody else. Elias, Brodeur, Rafalski and Madden are the main consumers. If one or two of them is dropped, Gionta can be signed.

Also, as for the Atlantic Division the Devils certainly can't win the division if they're bound to lose Gionta (or possibly Elias). As soon as Brodeur packs up and retires this team will dwindle down to nothing. Even right now, David Hale will be hard to sign PLUS they must give up SOMEBODY to get back under the cap. In other words, this team will go nowhere.

Personally its the Flyers versus the Rangers for the Atlantic. The Flyers did address some pressing issues on offense, restoring power to their lagging 3rd and 4th lines and allowing the younger players to flourish. Rangers did sign Shanahan which was their main pickup, and will probably have a serious run, backed by Lundqvist. Providing the Flyers are healthy, I believe they will win the Atlantic, but if not, its the Rag's.

Islanders will come in last on the division, not Pittsburgh--the Pen's didn't get much on the off season, but neither did the Isles. In fact, with all this uncertaintly heading into the season revolving around Garth Snow and Mr. Wang, I find it hard to believe that they will finish before the Pen's.

My Predicts:

NE:1.Buf 2.Mon 3.Ott 4.Tor 5.Bos

Why? Buffalo is returning MOST of their players. The loss of JP will be filled. Grier's place will be filled, and Mckee's has already. Drury, however, will be terrible beause of the loss of MG. Montreal, Great speed but a little undersized. Average goalie. Defense is underrated. Ottawa still has their offense. Their defense will be less intimating so expect teams go at them. Toronto, almost have it corrected. Give it 3 years. Boston, decent signings with Chara and a few others. Savard will help patrice. See Sabres over San Jose in the finals in 6 games...PS Buffalo will in Second place in conference, thank you Atlanta. Atlanta will win SE division.

Eastern Conference 1.Buffalo 112 points 2.Carolina 107 points 3. Philadephia 106 points( if everyone is healthy ecspecially Forsberg) 4. New York Rangers 101 points( people shouldn't underestimate this team, it has significantly improved with the addition of shanahan) 5.Ottawa 100 points( this team is still stanley cup caliber, there offense is still extremely potent and the defense is still formidable, but it will come down to how it all comes together escpecially Gerber) 6. New Jersey 96 points( i really believe in this team they are just soo horribly over the cap right now even without Gionta that I don't think they can be there dominant self, anything can happen with Brodeur though and they probably have the best line in hockey) 7. Atlanta 93 points( Atlanta needs Kari Lethonen to be the Roy potential goaltender that ppl say he can for this team to exceed at a high level, this is where the thrashers will be if he is only average, they just don't have the up front depth) 8. Florida 91 points( people have to stop underestimating this hockey club, look at their line up and it will change your mined, and before people think wow a panther fan, IM NOT! this team will be in the playoffs) 9. Boston 88 Points( to much young talent, not enough depth, this team will be a contender in due time) 10. Tampa Bay 86 points( the management on this team are idiots 20 million on 3 players! not saying they aint worth it but u lost the most major part of their team 2 years ago(khabibulin) and kubina , jay feester decimated the depth on this hockey team) 11. Toronto 82 points( no matter how much i hate the leafs i can't deny the fact that there defense is top 7 in the league now but no offense on a team that should be rebuilding (Ferguson the fans will come!) 12. Pittsburgh 76 points( if Malkin and Crosby light the lamp up this team will be a bit below average , if M.A. Fleurys breakout season isn't this season they will be lower) 13. Montreal 72 points( im not sayin that Cristobal Huets season was a fluke but dont suspect anethin out of him Quebecois, to many lazy undersized players 14. Washington 64 points ( Ovechkin, thats all i'm going to say Ovechkin)15. N.Y. Islanders 58 points( what a mess thats the only phrase i can say without this not getting posted)....... Western Conference 1. Nashville( just look at the depth chart and with radulov here is my favorite for the cup) 109 points 2. San Jose 107 points 3. Calgary 100 points 4. Anaheim 108 points 5. Detroit 98 points 6. Vancouver 97 points 7. Columbus 88 Points 8. Phoenix 87 Points 9. Minnesota 87 Points 10. Edmonton 85 Points 11. Dallas 80 Points 12. Los Angeles 75 Points 13. Actually, Buffalo didn't lose many players. I'm not saying that the loss of McKee, Grier and Dumant isn't going to hurt, but I don't think it's catastrophic. I think that they've already plugged the hole left by McKee, actually. But the great thing about Buffalo is that they are a team, and every player stepped up when they needed to. I mean, Dumont was out half of last season with an injury anyway. They aren't a team of big stars, but they don't need to be. I think that the player that they'll miss the most is Grier, but I don't think it's a loss that can't be overcome. Having come so close last year, I think that the Sabres want it more than ever, and I think that they can make it happen this year!

I'm a Ducks fan, they are awesome, they have a great defense Pronger, Niedermayer, and good forwards just the same Selanne, and Mcdonald. Not to mention Gigure I think is the biggest surprise. And it's obvious Aneheim is living up to ALL expectations this season. And about the Eastern Conference i'm dissapointed in the Flyers but I am happy for the Leafs.
