Early NHL 2006-2007 Predictions, Part 1: Western Conference

14
Vote

by user Madproof9

Free agency began a few weeks ago, and almost instantly most big name players got snatched-up. Rob Blake, Jeremy Roenick, Alex Tanguay, Bill Guerin, Doug Weight and Jason Arnott are some of the stars that were on the move early on, and for the most part, all the dealing is complete. Unless a blockbuster trade comes out of no where (which is unlikely, now that the king of all blockbusters, Pierre Lacroix is gone), what you see today will basically be the roster for your team come October. With that being said, it's time to make my predictions for the upcoming 2006-2007 NHL season, starting today with the Western Conference.

Western Conference

Central Division

St. Louis Blues

Nashville Predators

Detroit Red Wings

Columbus Blue Jackets

Chicago Blackhawks

Ok, ok, ok, let’s hear it... Get it out now... "Detroit won the Presidents trophy last year, they are going to win it again, they are so good, blah, blah, blah." I've explained that a million times, explained how they would lose in the first round, no one believed me then, and I was correct, so go ahead and think what you want now. Detroit isn't that good. The only reason they had so many points was because their division sucked last year, like I've explained. It won't suck as bad this year. They won't pick up an automatic 16 points from St. Louis like last year. They won't pick up an automatic 16 points from Chicago like last year. They won't even pick up an automatic 16 points from Columbus. That's 48 points right there that they won't automatically get next year. Take away all those points they won from awful teams (that aren't awful anymore), and you have an average team that finishes in the middle of the division. St. Louis picked up a few names like Bill Guerin, Dan Hinote, and Doug Weight, and Detroit lost a few names like Brendan Shanahan and Steve Yzerman. I think that is enough said right there. Nashville picked up Arnott, and combined with Kariya that will be enough to sneak them into the 2nd seed. Both Columbus and Chicago have a few good names, on paper, too bad they can't get it together over there in the Midwest.

Northwest Division

Calgary Flames

Edmonton Oilers

Colorado Avalanche

Vancouver Canucks

Minnesota Wild

It's always a dog-fight until the very end, and (last year) all 5 teams were good enough to make the playoffs. The Calgary Flames are going to repeat as the division champions, and Minnesota will round it out at the bottom. Those are the only two I am comfortable placing solidly at a spot, after that, it's a little jumbled. The only reason I can't go ahead and throw the Avalanche into 4th place is because as many bad moves as they have made this off-season, the other two real contenders left in the division haven't done much better. Even after the Oilers cup run, Chris Pronger, and Jaroslav Spacek, 2 key names in last years playoffs, booked it out of there like the city was burning. The same thing happened in Vancouver (is there something wrong with Canada?). Todd Bertuzzi and Ed Jovanovski were moved out, but Dan Cloutier, who was the starting goalie until he was injured, also decided to head south out of Canada. These three teams are going to be in a battle until the very end, Colorado always seems to find a way into the playoffs, and I don't think that streak is going to end, and Edmonton can still ride a little momentum throughout (at least part) of the season. Vancouver will have a new coach, and a new goalie (sure, he is supposed to be good, but look how far Florida went in the playoffs last year... 15 feet off their back porches to the golf course). Those two things will keep the Canucks near the bottom towards the end.

Pacific Division

Anaheim Ducks

San Jose Sharks

Dallas Stars

Phoenix Coyotes

Los Angeles Kings

This is going to be the hardest division to predict this season. All 5 teams have a legitimate chance at coming in first place, and all 5 have a good chance at coming in last. The Dallas Stars are almost always contenders, and the Ducks have risen to become a year-after-year threat. The Sharks are returning their key players Jonathan Cheechoo, and Joe Thornton, who just happened to be the league MVP and scoring champ last season. Phoenix has had a great off-season, picking up Jovanovski, Jeremy Roenick, and Georges Laraque to go along with their Captain Shane Doan and coach Wayne Gretzky. The Kings only big acquisition has been getting Rob Blake back in a purple uniform, and although it will help, it won't be enough to lift the Kings to the cup.

Playoff Seeds

1) Calgary Flames

2) St. Louis Blues

3) Anaheim Ducks

4) Nashville Predators

5) Edmonton Oilers

6) San Jose Sharks

7) Colorado Avalanche

8) Dallas Stars

Playoff predictions to come after I analyze the Eastern Conference.

Wow. Temperature are suppose to challenge the century mark in Philadelphia this week, and people are already giving out NHL predictions for the season. Don't you think this is a tad early. Not everyone has been signed. Training camp is still 2 months away. Start of the regular season isn't until October....

Also... there are an average 4 players per team not signed, which isn't that many left, and most of them are small-name players. And teams are starting mini-camps and skating at the end of this month, at least around here they are.

4 players? That is what 20% of the entire roster? That is enough to determine a playoff season and an early tee time come April.

It's not quite 20% of the roster, but even so, like I said, most of the players are non-impact players looking for small rookie-sized contract. I'll use YOUR Philadelphia Flyers as an example... Yeah, you have Desjardins still un-signed, but Desjardins himself won't make a huge playoff determining impact. The other players that are unsigned for your flyers... Pat Kavanagn, David Printz, Ryan Ready... have you even heard of these guys? I sure haven't, and they only have 22 NHL games between the 3 of them, so I'm sure you haven't either. You might... MIGHT... be able to name one big name player per team that isn't signed, but even that would be hard. Most players are where they are going to be.

I hadn't heard that. The other players though, have you heard of them? I follow the NHL pretty closely, and I never have. I see what you're saying, 4 players seems like a lot, but if you look around the NHL, most players that casual NHL fans know are already signed.

Ok, since when did St. Louis all of a sudden become a contender to win the Central. And since when did the Red Wings lose THAT much to the point where they don't make the playoffs at all?? You do realize they haven't missed the playoffs since the early 90's right? Sure they lost Stevie and Shanny, but maybe you've heard of guys like Lidstrom (only the best defenseman in the league)? Pavel Datsyuk? Henrik Zetterberg? Oh not too mention all the other youth they've got blooming in Detroit. I'm not saying Detroit will be as good as they've been, but I dont think they're bad enough to miss the playoffs entirely. I think they're battle Nashville for the division title.

Yes, I have heard of those players, and yes, I do know they haven't missed the playoffs since the early 90's. Now do you realize that prior to last year the Blues hadn't missed the playoffs in 25 straight years? Things can change with the loss of just a couple players (Weight, Pronger). They were a decent team last season, not as good as paper made them look. If you put them in the Northwest, they would have finished 3rd or 4th and possibly made the playoffs. If you put them in the Pacific, they would have finished 3rd or 4th and possibly made the playoffs. Now that St. Louis is back, Nashville improved from a stellar season, and Chicago and Columbus even improved a little bit, they aren't in a division that sucks so bad anymore. They aren't as good as people think they are, and this season is going to show that.

Madproof, I take it you're a blues fan? How can you say now, in July, that the Blues are back. Like you seem to liek saying, sure they have good players on paper, but it doesn't mean a damn if they can't put it together on the ice. Even w/ the Wings losses, I'd still take that roster over the Blues anyday.

As much as I hate the Red Wings, what I'm saying is not coming from my hatred towards them, it's coming from the facts. Look at the records from last season. Detroit played the other 4 teams in their division 32 times, and lost 5 times. They lost 19 times against teams outside the divion. That's a .844% winning percentage against their division, and only a .620% against other teams. That's a huge difference, and now their division is better, and they won't win all those games.

your numbers don't do much justice. If the Wings had a lower percentage in their division, say 70% or so and won around the same outside of it, they'd still make at least and 8 seed. To say they'll miss entirely is absurd! The Wings have been a powerhouse for the last decade, and I dont see how it would change after a few losses.

The same way I just mentioned above about the Blues. They won the Presidents trophy a few years back. They made the playoffs 25 straight years. And then it changed after a few losses. And the losses of Shanahan and Yzerman are alot more than the losses of Pronger and Weight. And yeah, my numbers do justice, because they won't win 70% of the games. That's what I'm trying to say. They aren't as good as you think they are. Think what you want, I knew everyone would give me crap about it,just like they did when I said Detroit wasn't getting out of the first round this year.

1) St. Louis has signed forwards Doug Weight, Bill Guerin, Dan Hinote, and Dallas Drake. That's an average age of 35(ish) with an average goal output of 9 per player. This team is going to finish last in their division and probably last in the conference. Oh yeah, and Curtis Sanford is their starting goalie (who?).

2)Vancouver acquired the second best goalie in the league. To have them not make the playoffs is obtus. Carter will sign again and the Sedin Sisters will put up better than point per game numbers. And the acquisition of Taylor Pyatt will help 3rd-4th line scoring as he's very capable of putting in 20. 3)Anaheim now has, arguably, the best two defencemen in the league. Their power play will be number one in the league. Their penalty killing will be number one in the league. They will win the President's Trophy and, probably, win the Stanley Cup - it'll take half the team to carry around Brian Burke though.

4) Phoenix made a 30 point improvement in Gretzky's first year. They add Jovo, Boyton, Kvasha, and Roenick and you have them not even making the playoffs? That simply won't happen.

1) It's an average of 32. I've stated my opinion on this division a hundred times, I'm not doing it again.

2) I don't see why everyone is on their knees for Luongo. His winning percentage in the NHL is .337%. That's not that great. In addition, he has ZERO games of playoff experience. Not a single game. Vancouver had a better team last year, and they didn't make the playffs, I don't see why it would change this year. And yeah, Pyatt is scoring 20? I don't think so. He scored 6 last season, and is referred to around the league as "uninspired," and "lazy."

3) Yeah, I think Anaheim will be good, that's why I have them winning their division, and making it to the Finals(which I haven't posted, because playoffs are the next article).

4) I live in Phoenix, I go to Coyotes games. They have a decent team, and had a decent team last year. However, they are in a really tough division. San Jose, Anaheim, Dallas. Can you honeslty say those three teams are not better than the Coyotes?

I just can't understand why everone thinks that Calgary is going to be so good. They still have no scoring. Yes they added alex tanguay, but thats not near enough. Did you know that Inginla had 6 less points than Bertuzzi last year. They will not finish any higher than 4th. I'm not sure that Oilers will do as well as they did last year but they will be in the playoffs there is no doubt about that. There way stronger up front then been in years. I guess its defence and goaltending that could be there down fall.

Nashville needs a little more credit. Yes, besides Detroit their division was weak last year. But they finished with the 4th seed with a large amount of 1st-2nd year players. It didnt help them in the playoffs that Vokoun and Steve Sullivan were hurt. Also, they signed Arnott since they need a large center. Now with an even more experience defense, they will finish with the first seed because of one reason.....Thomas Vokoun.

The Canucks, Avs, And Blues will not make the playoffs this year. The canucks just keep getting worse, the AVS are now depending on sacic way too much, and the blues have three old guys from the 96' world cup (weight, gurein, and kachuck) big deal. The kings traded key players away, columbus are just too young. The Flames are smart they got tanguay who can friggin pass that puck to iginla. The oil will be fit for last spot in the conference if lucky, but the coyotes will give them a go.

Heres my predictions

1) Nashville 2) Anaheim 3) Calgary 4) San Jose 5) Detriot 6) Dallas 7) Minnisota 8) Pheonix

Dude, you need to learn a little more about whats going on I think, first: these players leaving canada are not leaving because of the country, example: bertuzi/jovo moving to Florida, they both wanted that because of family reasons. Pronger: cheats on his wife and gets told where he is going to play by her..haha. ok. As for the Canucks not having proven goaltending, look at the shots on goal that Luongo took in Florida, he has an amazing GPA so with a real team in front of him he will shine even stronger....And saying Edmonton doesnt have a chance basily??? give your head a shake and go learn about our sport because you really have no clue

Umm... Jovo didn't go to Florida... the Pronger story may or may not be true. GPA stands for Grade Point Average (I'm assuming you're looking for Save % as that's the stat that comes from shots on goal). Vancouver is not a proven team... They have a cookie cutter defense with the softest forwards in the Western Conference. One good hit on a Sedin and he breaks in half, and no... it's not that hard to hit either of them.

Yes some of his predictions are indeed interesting and not what one would expect, but that's exactly what they are. Predictions based off of opinion. I'm sure that you (annonymous Fanatic #8) feel that you have a more complete knowledge of the game than Madproof9 but with your blind faith in the media shows that you may listen to things about hockey... but you obviously don't watch enough to form your own opinions.

And no... Edmonton doesn't have a chance this year.

It's sounds like no one is giving the Canucks a chance this year. Too bad. The Canucks as a team are younger which will only be useful for speed and determination to prove to coaches and other teams in the league. No Jovo no Bert, big deal. The two alone are very demanding for the puck, with those two at the beach, it will create more chances for others such as Morrison, Kesler(when signed), and Cooke. The Canucks will have to play as a complete team if they want to succeed. With the new coach Vigneault, being a hard nose coach, and isn't afraid to single out misplays or lack luster performances by players. Marc Crawford on the other hand just let the team play and if they won that was great. Canucks will sit 7th in the Conference, Av's 9th.

I do recall the hype about 5 or 6 years ago on how young and talented the Canucks are. At the same time the Canucks were going through an army of goaltenders. With Jovanoski and Bertuzzi past there prime, in return Roberto Luongo, back on Canadian soil, the Canucks will surprise. Speed, steady defense and strong goaltending are all recipes for success. 1. Anaheim

2. Calgary 3. Nashville 4. Detroit 5. Dallas 6. Edmonton 7. Vancouver 8. San Jose

With the acquisition of Pronger, Anaheim's defence is going to be scary good. Calgary's acquisition of Tanguay will help them score more goals. Nashville is going to be just as good as last year as long as Voukoun remains solid in net and the offensive line remains one of the fastest in the league. Considering Detroit plays against 3 of the worst teams in the league 24 times, they'll make it but lose in the first round. Dallas won't have as much fire power after losing Arnott and Guerin. And with Modano getting old, that doesn't help either. Edmonton probably has the best offensive unit in the league, but their defence is absolutely terrible after losing Pronger and Spacek. Luongo will help Vancouver make the playoffs this year for sure. San Jose's big three (Thornton, Cheechoo and Marleau) will beat out the competing teams for the last playoff spot.

Dark Horse: Minnesota might make it to the playoffs because of acquiring Demitra and I'm sure they'll continue using their cheap and boring offensive tactics.

St. Louis and Colorado won't even come close to the playoffs.

Minnesota will be second or third seed in the Northwest depending on how Calgary and Anaheim do. They have strong goaltending and defense how with the addition of Petteri Nummelin and Kim Johnsson. Their top two lines are extremly strong Demtra-Gaborik, Rolston-Bouchard, and Mikko Koivu is proving himself as a solid third line center. 6 for 9 in shootouts in his career. I have to admit, im a Minnesota fan and this is the best season we've had since we made that playoff run in 2003-2004 and beat out Vancouver and Colorado to end up getting swept by the Ducks. Is this prediction from the mid 90's? How the hell was St Louis expected to win their division with Nashville in it. Nashville has better forwards, D-men, goalies, and coaches. Then you add Detroit, who has better goalies, D-men, forwards, and coaches.
