Eagles vs Pats: My insight and keys for the Eagles

It's not going to be the best article, but I have a small bit of time to write.

Keys to victory:

1) The Offensive Line must hold up against a very strong and fast Defensive front. Richard Seymour is a beast. He'll be lining up with Thomas/Herramans. These two need to keep him at bay all game. Reid should NOT under-estimate the power of Seymour/Wilfork/Warren. All are young, in their primes and seem unstoppable.

2) The WRs need to GET OFF THE BUMP! Reggie Brown has FAILED when he gets bumped. I'm still waiting to see this tremendous skill of his and have his breakout year. Kevin Curtis is doing a good job this year, playing the bump OK. When he gets open he's hard to catch and does make people miss. If the Eagles were smart they would utilize their height advantage in Hank Baskett(6'4") and Jason Avant(6'1") and line them up against Ellis Hobbs who is a mere 5'8". That's not to say Hobbs isn't a good corner, but height is helpful.

3) RUN THE BALL! If there's ANY "weakness" in this Pats defense, it's their Run defense. It's not a glaring or huge weakness, but they can be prone to giving up the big plays. Especially in the red zone. They've given up quite a few red zone TDs. I can't find the stats(not my computer, don't have it bookmarked). Use Brian Westbrook as always. Run screens please! Split him out wide and run a 2 back formation with Buckhalter and Hunt. That's another thing. USE HUNT! He's a big big RB and can power for some good yards especially in the red zone.

4) Contain the WRs! Force the Pats to run the ball. Force them to have Maroney beat you. The Eagles are allowing 97.8 RYPG while the Pats are averaging 131.5 RYPG. Lito Sheppard will have his hands full with Moss but Joslieo Hanson MUST CONTAIN WES WELKER! I have confidence that Sheldon Brown will do his part on Stallworth. Remember, if you can shut down the passing attack, you've given yourself a great chance to win.

Those are, what I believe, are the keys for the Eagles to win. I know people may laugh at the thought of the Eagles even scaring the Pats, but I have faith.

A.J. Feeley starting might be a blessing in disguise...forcing the eagles to run with b-west... as far as the d-line, its' a not brainer...IMO those three guys were responsible (more than anyone else) for their 2004 Superbowl win...not branch...

I agree. Westbrook is the main key to victory. He'll out run those LBs no problem...

I agree with Feeley starting as a potential blessing in disguise. The Patriots practiced all week for McNabb, we've played against him before and have typically done well against him. Feeley is someone we're unfamiliar with and relatively unprepared against. As a side-note, I'm hoping to rack up my ejection totals for this game. Night games always bring out the drunks, and there will probably be a lot of heated discussions between Pats fans and the large number of Eagles fans we're expecting.

Where's the bets article? I believe the Eagles can beat the Patriots - crazier things have happened before...

so do I. I just watched the High School Football championship last night, and the inferior team won b/c they were able to dominate with the run, and keep their opponent's score at will offense off the field. It could be the exact same thing. IF the pats can't stop the run, the tables will turn in Philly's favor

Football is blatently easy if you win the battle of turnovers and the clock.

Or injure the other team's star players. (heard it here first)

I hate hearing the experts taling like it's a guaranteed win for the Pats. I was watching the NFL show on HBO this morning and instead of picking the winner of this game, they picked how badly the Pats will dominate. I really just think the media is trying to jinx them... this is still the NFL and no game is a sure thing. I liked it better in 2001 when they were the dogs in every game.

The game begins at 8:30. I am planning on going to the 10PM Mass on Penn's campus. The game should be over by 9:30, so I will not be missing anything. I may light a candle for the Eagles in Church though....

I'm an Eagles fan and I can't find a single scenario where the Birds win this game. It's not an impossibility, but it's as close to one as you can get. And what's worse, even a win might not mean much in the grand scheme of things; as the Eagles still might struggle to make the playoffs.

I'm a Patriots fan and I can think of countless scenarios that result in an Eagles win. You force a few turnovers, maybe make a special teams play or two, play mistake free on offense, win the field position battle. Plus, with all this hype surrounding the Patriots, it is very likely the players might start thinking about going 19-0 more than they think about getting to 11-0. That's a recipe for failure.

That's not really countless scenarios considering the Eagles would have to do ALL of them to win the game. And considering no one has forced fewer turnovers than the Eagles this year, Brady doesn't turn it over, and the Eagles special teams has been mediocre at best, that's why I can't think of a way the Eagles win this game. But, I agree, anything can happen. And if there's been one sure thing in the NFL over the past bunch of years, it's that there are no sure things.

The Eagles quarterback this game does not matter, they need to use the screen pass to Westbrook to have a chance.

What they really have to do is find a way to hold the Pats under 40 points...which I don't see them doing considering the way they've been defending the pass lately.

Well it goes without saying that they must play sound defense to win but they are going to have to put up at least 30 to win this game.

I think they're going to need to put up at least 40ish because I just don't think they can realistically expect to hold the Pats under any less than that. And that is incredible to think that you need to score 40+ points to have a shot at winning.
