Eagles look encouraging in HOF Game

It's still very early, and we only saw the starters for a series or so... but you have to be encouraged by what you saw from the Eagles last night. If they play nearly as well as they did last night we should be in for very good things things this year.

Some Game thoughts:

  • Darren Howard absolutely dominated Robert Gallery(as did everyone the Eagles sent out against him). Howard was in the backfield stuffing the run or hitting the passer all three plays in the first 3 & out the Eagles forced to open the game. In the second series, he was just as active and when he moved inside for the pass rush he brought tremendous pressure that pushed Aaron Brooks right into Trent Cole's arms. The whole starting defensive looked fantastic, but Howard clearly stood out.
  • How about that up the gut running? The Eagles took their opening drive down the field ith ease to core the first touchdown of the game. The drive was clearly on the back of Brian Westbrook as Reid sent him right up the middle behind Jackson, Andrews, and Herremans, all of whom seemed to bully the Raiders defensive line around. Andy really seemed to sent a message running the ball to start the game. Westbrook looked very crisp as well.
  • McNabb looked very good in his extremely limited time. He only played one series, but went 3 for 3 and made three accurate bullet passes to Baskett, Brown, and Westbrook.
  • Winston Justice stood out in the 2nd team offense absolutely pancaking his man on more than one occasion.
  • Did everyone see JR Reed running with the 2nd team defense? He actually seemed to play pretty well at safety.
  • Akers couldn't have hit that 55 yarder(a HOF game record) more perfectly. He looked in midseason form already
  • Matt McCoy played alot. He ran with the first team defense and was still in the game in the 3rd quarter. I'm not sure anyone else played that much. Other than one very stupid late hit that an NFL starter shouldn't be taking... He looked fairly good, especially against the run and seemed to have a very high motor.
  • There wasn't much to see in the 2nd half as both teams deep bench players didn't seem to do much.

Well, if the first preseason game is an indicator of something, that something is usually nothing.

Eagles first units look strong. Second & third stringers stunk. It will comes down to injuries with this club. . . .

i think baskett will be a nice sleeper in fantasy drafts. you didn't mention the big injury in the fourth quarter! it didn't look too bad, but it sounded awful. I think it was great how jason avant was praying for bruce perry to be o.k. i think he was even crying. meanwhile, mcnabb looked like he didnt even care

according to cbssportsline: Eagles RB Bruce Perry (concussion) was carried off on a stretcher Sunday vs. Oakland with 1:14 remaining, his head immobilized. He was tackled by rookie Timi Wusu on a running play. Players from both sides stood silently or kneeled in prayer before Perry was removed. "He had some loss of feeling in his arms and legs initially and the feeling started to come back," Eagles head coach Andy Reid said. Perry gave a thumbs-up as he was wheeled to an ambulance and taken to a hospital. Reid said Perry had a concussion and a team spokesman added X-rays of Perry's neck were negative. A CT scan also was normal and the team expected Perry to accompany them back to Pennsylvania.

Ahh, I love when people try to draw conclusions about the regular season based on the preseason. Too bad the preseason is meaningless.....I remember one of the years the Pats won the SB (forget which one), they went 0-4 in the preseason. The preseason should be taken for what it is: NFL Head coaches experimenting with their J/V players, not a preview of the regular season.

Winston Justice might prove to be the steal of the draft. He fell because of off-field problems, but he'll be an NFL stud.
