ESPN may have set a record for longest butt kissing to any athlete

For those (besides me) who saw the LA Galaxy vs. Chelsea game on ESPN, I don't know whether or not I feel sorry for you. That was single handedly, the worst broadcast ever for any sport by the supposed "Worldwide Leader in Sports". They might as well not have aired the game at all, and just shown David Beckham for the full 90 minutes. The announcers were horrible (especially Eric Wynalda, who is virtually impossible to shut up when he's on a rant), they over did the whole broadcast. Who really cares for aerial coverage of a soccer game, when you can barely see the players or the ball? They've got skycam, they've got the celebrity cam, but the one that made me laugh the hardest, was the Beckham Cam. That caused Dave O'Brien to say that "Beckham stood up, that's exciting.".

^^$($)()(*@)#@)#)$##)%##)%)*#)*#)*%)*)%*#)**)%!!!!!!!! That's why I can't stand American announcers for a soccer game. They (especially O'Brien) always talk more about themselves, someone's drug problems, and celebrities, more than the actual freaking game! I watched some of the friendly match, and Chelsea were practically destroying them. But did the commentators notice that? Nope. They had Allen Hopkins interview the Governator. It was a farce to watch, and it is a disgrace to all the soccer fans who watched on ESPN. At the same time, it's not that surprising when you consider they do the same thing during a regular MLS game or a US International match. When you consider all the hype they put Beckham through, what is the result?!! He plays for 12 minutes, does nothing. That dude was so over hyped, it's not even funny.

Let's face it, the only way I'll ever watch a soccer game on ESPN, is if they stop making everything an entertainment show. I could care less about which player was raised by a hyena, I want to watch the game.

Ranting aside, you listen to the commentary on the 3 videos below (including when Beckham comes on to the field). They are Dave "MLB" O'Brien, Eric "Can't Shut Up" Wynalda, and Tommy "Old Onion Bag" Smyth. Video 1 is the start of the 2nd half, in which Chelsea scored the only goal. Video 2 is when you know who comes in. Video 3 is when he actually "plays".

After watching that game, all the commercials, and the highlights on Sportscenter I ended up downloading "Hello Goodbye" by The Beatles and that was the only good thing I took from the whole experience.

I agree completely! ESPN's coverage of sports is becoming less and less about the actual games and more about useless puff pieces and an open mic for its self-absorbed, self-important announcers. This nonsensical formula works with sports with frequent and lengthy stoppages, like baseball and NFL football, but the beauty of soccer is the fact that the game is only about the game, not unrelated chats about tabloid fodder and personal lives. Listening to European announcers during a match drives home just how bad ESPN's coverage truly is!

I think Snagglepuss could do a better job than they could.

I'm surprised ESPN didn't do one of those multiple angle shows...with at least one frame featuring the "beckham Cam" and another just on posh... It should have happened, and i'm disappointed...

Funny Tyrone. I think ESPN had to have it's lips forcifully remove from Beckham's tush.

It is an ESPN problem. I did not see the soccer game, but here are a few examples. Dick Vitale doing college basketball, Michael Vick against the my Panthers when he came back from his broken leg was the worse "butt kissing" I've ever seen. Theismann and the rest of the announcers were in love with Vick that night.

ESPN has got a thing for the following teams: The Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees, The LA Lakers, The New England Patriots, Duke Basketball, North Carolina Basketball, and the LA Dodgers. Everytime it's a Seattle team doing well. Like the time we went to the super bowl, they base it on an easy schedule and luck. Now the Mariners are good this year, and they say that they are a lucky team. They've got to be pretty freaking lucky at 54-41.

Everytime it's a Seattle team doing well, they come up with an excuse. They can't just say "They're good.".

ESPN's problem is that they're the only game in town for sports and they know it. It has turned into full-time cross-promotion.

It's annoying isn't it? And with the idea of watching FSN Northwest, I'm in a bind.

I wasn't able to watch the game, but I can only assume that was the end result. That said, I watched the first 5 or 6 minutes of Video 1, and they never even mentioned Beckham and showed him 3 or 4 times. I will agree with SSreporters, I have seen way worse (FSN Florida)

I liked when someone slide tackled Beckham directly to the ankles. Overrated overpaid..... He isn't saving American Soccer.. It is going to take more than Mr. Posh Spice to do that.

ESPN has always been all about promoting star athletes and using their glamour to sell their product. They do it in other sports. See: Barry Bonds, Tony Romo, Danica Patrick, Carl Edwards, Lebron James, and so on. Strangely enough, they only really focus on these stars if they happen to have sports regularly featured on ESPN or ABC. Odd coincidence.

Now, if Ronaldhino or Thierry Henry, or any other truly great player that was world class came to the MLS, that would be exciting. THAT would help promote the MLS to a higher echelon. But right now, I'd still say that MLS is on a level with 2. Bundesliga, maybe even 3. Bundesliga.

I said in another comment on another article that the Beckham fiasco proves how much of a joke MLS is. Let me explain that. Beckham is in the twilight of his career. He's a big name with an average skill set and old legs. Hell, he won't even do much to help the LA Galaxy be a better team. He's Babe Ruth on the Boston Braves at the end of his career, Tom Hanks in A League of Their Own, he's a $1 beer night at a minor league ballpark, he's a spectacle meant to draw attention and sell tickets.

I only watched the end of this game, but I just thought it was funny how apathetic Posh Spice seemed to be. I saw the tackle on Beckham's knee, and his lack of fire after it was really telling of how much he didn't care about winning the match. He just wants to play and still be seen and remain the center of attention, which he made himself at the end of the match when all the Chelsea and Galaxy players were talking with each other, and he was by himself with a camera in front of him.

1-0? What exactly were the supposed to talk about? How many blades of grass the left wing ran past to kick the ball outta bounds? Compare a throw-in to how Shaq shoots foul shots? How many crossing passes led up to a shot on a 20 yard-wide goal that had no chance of going in? Whaddya expect them to say when there's nothing going on?

So basically the only thing going on in that game was a goal?

Yes. 8 shots on goal in 90+ minutes? While that may satisfy the hordes around the world who follow football, that kind of mind-numbing inaction will bore the faces off of TV viewers country-wide and leaves not much of note for commentators to talk about.

ESPN or any other sports network tends to get off basis on what they tend to do. It's supposed to be about the game and not about off-topic shit.

I think the ass-kissing would have been far more effective if they had done the following. Kept the Beckham cam when he was on the bench, fine. When he gets on the field, have a little diamond and a name tag over his head, like they do for characters on the Sims. That way, we'd always know where Beckham was and the announcers would never forget whose ass they were kissing.
