ESPN Points Out Another Useless Statistic on MNF

Seriously ESPN, please stop with the irrelevant stats. Tough as it may be, the millions that watch MNF aren't stat geeks. Last night, as I painfully watched the NFL preseason, the Dolphins had an 11-10 lead over the Chiefs, in which they went for a 2 point conversion (you didn't think there would be OT preseason football did ya?) , Mike Tirico pointed out that never ever ever had an NFL game finished 11-10. That caused for reason to talk about it for the final 5 minutes of the broadcast. Had Clark Gable from Gone With the Wind heard that stat, I think he'd say, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn.". He's right, who cares? That is why MNF is so impossible to watch, you have 3 people yakking in the booth, 2 sideline reporters that add a whopping 0% to the game, and celebrity interviews.

That being said, it improved a whole lot by getting rid of Joe Theismann.

Although I do agree there is still a significant amount of fluff in the MNF broadcasts, Jaws makes the booth ten times better than it was with Theismann.

First off, I totally agree with your overall premise that MNF is overflowing with senseless and irrelevant small talk. However, as much as I hate to admit it, the fact about the 11-10 score struck me as kinda cool. (this article is the first i've heard of it)

I was listening to the cricket the other day. Bill Frindall, the statistician (he keeps scores etc.). Now, there was an Indian batsman, by the name of Rahul Dravid. India needed to bat for a bit of time to take the game beyond England. Sourav Ganguly scored runs at the other end, whilst Dravid (nicknamed "The Wall" as in his ability to defend forever) blocked and did no more. We were constantly updated that Dravid, should he be out at the moment, would have had the slowest ever innings of 5 in the history of Test cricket (i.e. since 1877), in over 2 hours. As he actually scored runs, we were reminded of this same fact for 6, 7, 8 and then 12 runs (he hit a boundary worth 4 runs). But then he was dismissed, and for a while there was a chat about how Rahul Dravid had made the slowest 12 in the history of Test cricket (I think it was 2 hours and 40 minutes in the end). Normally, you'd look to score over 50 in that time. I wasn't complaining, it added something to the game, I thought. Normally you hear that sort of thing about the highest innings to win a Test, or the best bowling figures at a ground... But no, we got the slowest 12 in the history of cricket. Nothing special about the innings either. Thinking about it, it's amazing that in 130 years, scorers throughout over 1,800 Test Matches have painstakingly kept such records. Apparently, Frindall has records kept for the slowest player to each run from 1 to 100 (as well as the fastest, but for lower numbers, that's pretty irrelevant).

Alex, if you come to the States, deal with it. USA commentators have got to be the worst in the world. There are some brilliant ones, but most of them suck.

And 10 bucks says that at least two games this season end in a final score of 11-10

Watch the CFL, you'll get 11-10 with the single point thingy.

All we need now is the classic 3-2 game where a team boots a FG in the waning moments to overcome a safety.
