ESPN No More!

I've had it! I walked into my local watering hole and they had ESPN HD on. You never guess what was on the other day?...the World Championship of dominos!?! And ESPN Classics doesn't play classics.

Well here are my issues. I want to see if me and my friends at my bar are the only one fed up with the programming:

1. The downfall of ESPN Classic: Great idea, but now? I suppose if you like boxing in black-and-white and Division 2 college football games from 1982, it's okay. How about some Boston Red Sox -New York Yankees playoff games? Or recent a Super Bowl?

2. Maybe I'm crazy, but shouldn't TV personalities have, well, personalities? Mariotti and Bayless are the worst, but Wilbon is gathering steam.

3. Barry Bonds Show...EHCK! Need I say anymore?

4. Billiards, Wheel Chair Billiards, even poker and other stuff. OK...I'll watch it, but if there is a great MLB game on, I want to watch that!

OK, maybe because I sit at a bar with my laptop for an hour or two after work typing online before I go to my friendly confines of my apartment. But when all I want to do is watch a game on ESPN, or even the news, all I get is some Dominoe tourny, or a show that has go so down hill they are running neck and neck with the Chicago Cubs in rank for crap.

I just want some better programming, less garbage, less Mariotti and I'll be happy. I won't touch on the ESPY's as we all (including me) already posted that to death tonight. Am I wrong in saying I miss the old ESPN Sports Center when tuning into nightly was a religion and I could get my full dose of sports in. Now with all the crap out there ESPN is looking like it'll open the doors to anyone. As for me, leave the dominos at home.

P.S. I swear, please nobody start a Domino page on here. Sports are sports...no exceptions.

I saw that dominoes crap... if you looked in the background, all the signs said "ESPN Deportes." It's kinda pathetic taht there are no "American Sports" worth watching, so we have to turn to the Spanish channels highlights. ESPN is turning into MTV. It used to be the revolutionary station for the format, and now it's fading away.

At least put on strongest man or outdoor challange. Not saying those can be much better though. But at least it's athletic.

I'll break them if my laptop gets broken. It's a nice little neighborhood bar. Perfect for beer and sports.

Hopefully, ArmchairGM can grow large enough to put some pressure on ESPN to go back to its roots. Providing sports news for the fans.

What's frustrating to me is how ESPN U is putting a monopoly on college sports, especially the "lesser" sports. Except for a very rare exception on Fox Sports, I have to wait until the College World Series to see any college baseball or softball. But they have all the time in the world to show dominos and poker, or whatever horrendous made-for-t.v. movie they just came out with. Of course, Fox Sports isn't much better. They show RERUNS of poker tournaments for most of the day.

I was watching ESPN classic once and they dedicated a whole day to Roger Clemens' historic career. I thought that was pretty cool. But the worst is ESPN 2. You mentioned it is becoming worse than MTV, but ESPN 2 really is worse than MTV (except for madden nation, that show is pretty cool if you're up at 2am)

I think it's safe to say that ESPN has their reasons for airing Dominoes rather than an MLB game. first and foremost, the rights to these games are often exclusive to regional broadcasters and aren't even available for national coverage. Second, ESPN is one of the most internationally viewed channels alongside CNN and MTV. So, when you see some obscure kickboxing match between two 17-year old Phillipino kids, you may change the channel quickly. Keep in mind that many other people in other countries are transfixed by the match. Also, about Mariotti and Bayless. They are idiots, they give outlandish opinions and find the mark very rarely; this is dnoe on purpose. They are entertainers, or TV personalities if you prefer, not true sports journalists. Peter Gammons is there to offset Jon Kruk, John Clayton to offset Merril Hodge (dear god, get a non-color blind person to pick your suits out) and Kirk herbstreit to offset Lee Corso. Theres no doubt that all of these men have knowledge of their respective sports; however, not all of them seem to be able to convey it clearly and accurately. Give mariotti a break, he's a local beat writer for Chicago who has been thrust into the spotlight because of a loud-mouther manager and a snappy TV show.

Yeah well the sad part is the Spelling Bee was too big for ESPN this year and made prime time on ABC...

Theres a difference between compelling and being a sport... My girlfriend finds Desporate Houswives compelling but I dont want it on my ESPN.

I agree, interesting or viewable do not make a sport. I don't care how much people like the spelling bee, I don't need to see it on a "sports" channel. At this point, ESPN News is the only true sports channel.

I'll get modded down, but seriously those kids have skill. Its amazing the words that they can spell. I could barely pronounce half the world they were rattling off with ease.

There's many things to hate about ESPN, but I personally think I couldn't survive as a sports fan without it. Especially the website.
