ESPN Mobile Is Dead

15
Vote

After less than a year, ESPN is calling it quits on ESPN Mobile, its cellphone service designed specifically for sports fans. The Worldwide Leader will continue providing the service for subscribers until the end of the year, at which time they will help subscribers transfer their phone numbers to other carriers. The news comes on the heels of a note to investors from Merrill Lynch analysts that called for ESPN to "throw in the towel" on the service. Despite an aggressive marketing campaign (Reggie Bush!) and a $150 million investment by ESPN parent company Walt Disney Co., the number of subscribers to ESPN Mobile has only numbered in the tens of thousands. As a result, Disney stands to lose $135 million in the venture, to go along with additional losses from ESPN Mobile's sister service, Disney Mobile.

All of which goes to show that America really wasn't ready to look down at their cell phones and see Trey Wingo staring back at them. As if we needed a marketing flop on the scale of Ishtar to tell us that...

As recently as a month ago, ESPN was using 10% of its spending budget on marketing and keeping ESPN Moble going.

It was a neat idea, but there just aren't enough people out there that are SO fixated on sports that they're going to spend their money on a phone that will tell them whether or not their fantasy football team sucks. Frankly, I'm kind of glad it's failing. The idea of people buying a phone that would send them sports updates was, for some reason, a little troubling to me.

I noticed a couple of days ago ESPN's regular mobile site has gotten better looking, and easier to use.

Agreed, it was a good idea. Currently on my phone I recieve updates via text messages for UVA athletics and I like that. I liked the idea of being able to see sports all the time. The problem with the moble phone was it was a terrible phone package. With Vcast and other such media outlets available on cell phones, with good rates, why would a person buy a phone to get 2 inch highlights and then get charged overages for it?

To me it was the overadvertising. I didn't like the campaign and it was on ALL THE TITIME!

I believe Dan Shannof claimed this would be the Greatest. Thing. Ever. That right there pretty much guarenteed failure.

They had the right idea, but timing was off (a few years late) and because of that, they couldn't compete. What they should have done (and might want to do in the future) is have people pay extra for the service (like what is done with text messaging). That way, people can stick with Cingular, Verizon, Sprint, etc, and still get the ESPN thing.

Funny... I always assumed that this WAS a service provided by one or more other carriers, and just re-branded by ESPN. I had no idea what a colossal overextension this was on behalf of Disney and ESPN.
