ESPN: Worldwide Leader My Left Testicle

I attempted to watch the LA Beckhams vs. Chivas USA on ESPN. Two things happened that set me off: One, a freaking WNBA playoff overtime game ran over the first 4 minutes. Two, Dave O'Brien and Eric Wynalda were commentating. O'Brien (AKA Can't Shut Up #1) decided to call Beckham "heroic" for travelling from England all the way back to LA to play in his 2nd game in 2 days. Uhh....Dave, not only did Landon Donovan do the same thing (from Sweden), but European players do that all the time! Towards the end of the game, when the Beckhams were down 3-0, Wynalda (AKA Can't Shut Up #2) said "I think the fans should start booing these guys.". Nothing gets this dude happy. So I've given you the beginning of the game, and the end, now let's talk about the rest.

  • What's up with showing the starting lineups 18 minutes into the game???!!!!! That is simpleton thinking in spite of the WNBA game
  • Who cares that Chivas player Maykal Galindo likes Scarface and played soccer barefoot? I can't stand the fact that they put up useless stats about these guys, in which I can easily look up at a computer.
  • Bob Ley was part of the halftime crew. That I like very much. He can replace Dave and Rob Stone.
  • Anyone else notice that whenever Beckham touched the ball, you would hear girly shrieks?
  • I don't need 15 camera angles for a soccer game, especially skycam. Why would you want an aerial view of soccer?

This is an absolute joke ESPN comes up with and passes off as soccer. If they're the supposed "Worldwide Leader in Sports", why don't they air Rugby, Cricket, and the CFL?

Later on today, I'll write an article about things ESPN can do to improve its image on a global standpoint.

One thing that is very annoying for me when watching the beautiful game when it is carried by ESPN is that commentating crew do talk way too much. Plus I would like to see them (or anyone) carry Aussie Rules Footy.

Derek Rae is perfect for MLS, not Dave.

This is the chronic problem with ESPN. Their coverage of any sport has devolved from 90% sports/10% entertainment 10-12 years ago to (at best) 60% sports today. I fear that ESPN will get into broadcasting European club soccer (they'll definitely do EPL at some point, maybe they'll try La Liga or Serie A as well) and they'll destroy the viewing experience with:

A) too many camera angles B) announcers that either talk WAY too much or don't know the game (seriously, couldn't you see them just plugging in Greeny and Golic to do a Chelsea-Liverpool match?)

C) Beating us over the head with 400 idiotic, screen-blocking graphics

Absolutely right. ESPN assumes that "Worldwide" = USA. It isolates itself from everything else, it seems. Beckham should not have played though. That was stupid. If it wanted to live up to its claim, then it should cover cricket, rugby, Formula One, snooker...

In addition, they should not use their own commentators for cricket or rugby, then we'd just be the shame of the world sportscasting wise for all eternity.

US commentators are awful. Sorry, that's one thing Britain rules the roost on.

I'm not gonna argue about espn's coverage being good, but damn you really have a vitriolic hate towards the MLS and ESPN.

Not the MLS and ESPN, it's MLS ON ESPN.

I cannot believe I am doing this, but in defense of O'Brien, European players hardly ever have to fly the 5,000 miles that Beckham and Donovan did to put in two straight matches in two days. The problem is compounded by having to cross the entire USA for the match. Had that match been LA vs. the New England Revolution, the travel time and distance would have been much less of a load. He is suffering from the same thing that European clubs see in the South Americans when they play WC qualifiers then turn right around and return to Europe.

What I'm saying, is that if Beckham is a hero, why isn't Donovan?

Importantly, the European national matches are deliberately scheduled, so that they have time off for these games. They tend not to schedule domestic games for the following day...

When is England scheduled to lose again?

That would on September 8, SSreporters, when England are scheduled to lose to Israel at Wembley. ;-)

ESPN's coverage of tennis is much worse than of MLS. You know a sport isn't respected when it is regularly shown on tape rather than live. Do they somehow think we don't know what happened? Idiots.
