ESPN, Racism and Chad Johnson

1
Vote

DID CHAD JOHNSON GO TOO FAR THIS TIME!!! A cast member from Disney Sports (commonly known as ESPN) screams with so much glee that it makes me queasy. On Cold Pizza this morning Peckerwoody Paige, Skippy Payless and moderator Jay “[Chinese people] can’t pay for NBA all-star tickets with chickens” Crawford debated whether or not Chad Johnson had overstepped his boundaries by saying he wants to “hit Ray Lewis in the mouth.”

I restored your precious article. I don't know how using all caps, using childish nicknames and a random paragraph that doesn't make any sense counts as professional jouralism, but whatever. I'm sure you'll get all kinds of votes on this professional masterpiece.

I wrote this to Manny, but you might as well know, too. I didn't give Paige that nickname, Scoop Jackson did about eight years ago in response to a Paige column about Chauncey Billups. If you don;t think it's funny, fine. I don't either - I feel it is appropriate.

...Skippy Payless is an age-old nickname for Bayless.

No one said this is a professional masterpiece - it wasn't meant to be. It's an off-the-cuff opinion piece. However, jibberish, it isn't.

I'm not an angry black guy, but I don't see how it's racist, either. Are we not allowed to criticize black players? This is as stupid as that article from the Orlando Sentinel proclaiming that people hated JJ Redick because he was a white guy playing a black guy's sport.

"Peckerwoody Paige" - THAT would be funny if it was funny... I hate the Human Race; Humans do a LOT of stupid stuff that makes me hate them... does that make me racist?

Both Bayless' and Crawford's statements are patently racist. Saying "you can't pay for All-Star tickets with chickens" when describing Chinese people isn't racist? I explained why calling Johnson is racist. Additionally... Manny, I didn't give Paige that nickname, Scoop Jackson did about eight years ago in response to a Paige column about Chauncey Billups. If you don;t think it's funny, fine. I don't either - I feel it is appropriate.

Is it racist if it's true? I mean, you really CAN'T pay for tickets with chickens, last time I checked, anyway... (actually, you probably could in some countries) But what does ANY of this have to do with Chad johnson wanting to play Smash Mouth football with Ray Lewis?

You know, sullen is a fairly common word that has legitimate meaning outside of being a racial stereotype. It's entirely possible Bayless didn't know that it's an old racist term. I didn't know it, and I'd be illing to wager that 9 out of 10 AGM users wouldn't have known it. Are we to avoid every single word that's ever been used as a racist connotation? Because that would severely limit our vocubulary. Many bigots describe Hispanics as lazy. So, if I were to question, say, Pedro Martinez's work ethic and describe him as lazy, would that make me "patently racist"?

Okay, Manny. You can't pay for tickets with burritos. You can't pay for tickets with chitlins. Get it? If you don't, you dan't have a clue. I mentioned the chicken quote in the context of Crawford's persona. I mentioned it in that context to later address racism as it applies to ESPN - specifically the 1st and 10 crew. And all of it pertains to Chad Johnson's obvious joke that ESPN, in total, has used to create conflict where this is none (just watch Ray Buchannon's comments about "what the Ravens will do to Johnson" because of his - joke).

love the name, M.A. but maybe we need more content...

You know, spouting pseudo-racist comments isn't racism... it's childish-ism and ignorance. Making decisions or taking actions based on those pre-perceptions would be racism.

There's a difference between name calling and actual hate, moron. See? I just did it and I even like you! ...idiot.

Why are people so stupid about "racism"? The more we talk about it being a problem, the more of a problem it becomes. Show me a person who got to choose what race they are and I'll show you a person who's NOT ALLOWED to make racist jokes, innuendos and comments. Otherwise, unless they say it directly to you GET OVER IT (it's non of your business anyway, stop looking to make issues out of everything)

For instance - People make jokes and "comments" about me being tall or ask me if I play basketball? Tell me how that is different from racist comments and maybe you'll understand what I'm saying. Everyone is different, pointing out those differences is merely an indicator of childish ignorance.

Words aren't "racist", actions are...
