ESPN's Worst Color Analyst

18
Vote

by SSreporters

Another installment of the ESPN's worst..... series. It can be an in studio analyst or one who is at the game. Pick who you think is the worst color analyst for any sport. The only exceptions are poker, the spelling bee, and the legendary rock, paper, scissors tournament.

My Entry: Eric Wynalda. That dude is the epitome of arrogance and ignorance. He's made several racial comments, he complains about everything, and he's part of ESPN's MLS (Mercifully Lousy Soccer) coverage.

If Joe Morgan is the worst, that must Joe Theisman the best.

Best TV moment for Theisman was when LT broke his leg. It has been down here for Joey since.

BETH MOWINS.

Without a doubt the most irritating voice on television today. Worse than Fran Drescher, I'm talking the entire realm of TV, she is so awful to listen to.

While we're on the topic, Jennie Finch might be nice to look at, but using her as a color analyst is a waste. And then you have those two together? UGH.

And I like softball, just not either of them (as broadcasters).

A minus for that? If you can't stand the sound of the analysist's voice, why not play some entertaining music?

Well, they've gotta start drawing the line somewhere or ESPN won't ever dump the nut. They'll just prop up his embalmed body at the announcers table and run random recordings of his voice, kinda like he does now.....

Well, my nominee works for ABC which owns ESPN... does that count? Well, anyways, Hubie Brown is the guy that annoys me the most. He is senile and he only has about 4-5 different comments that he contradicts himself with. He is also constantly calling out the wrong players names and has the most irrelevant things to add. I actually wrote to ABC about this guy, but apparently my sway with the network isn't what it used to be... or rather, never existed...

Couldn't disagree more about Wynalda, he loves soccer, loves his country (which is good when you're watching US soccer matches) and tells it like it is. If someone is doing a bad job he'll let you know (see Erpen in last years playoffs against the Red Bulls). I would be disappointed to hear if he had made specifically racial comments, but i don't recall any.

During US vs. Guatemala Friendly: After noticing many calls going against the US, he don't mean to be offensive (or something like that), but he is mexican. Don't bring politics into a soccer game.

Shouldn't you be neutral for any soccer game no matter what?

Absolutely not. Not in this country, anything Wynalda can do to create excitement for soccer in this country is appreciated. Plus it's a broadcast ONLY being shown in the US, so why be neutral? If he's broadcasting a club match he generally is neutral. As for his comments about the ref being Mexican i would guess it had nothing to do with being racist. The Mexico-US soccer rivalry is vicious. Mexico wants to beat the US probably more than anything. During one particular game in the last couple years, the Mexican goalkeeper tried to take out Beasley's legs as he was running away from goal after the US had scored. So if anything he's saying the ref was not acting impartially because he does not like our soccer team. Politics/racism most likely has nothing to do with it, as much as the US-Mexico soccer rivalry.

Why be neutral? It's called journalistic integrity. Which is what all of these former athletes-turned-analysts should have, whether they think they signed up for it or not.

You might get folks to watch soccer in the US if they got the Canadian Naked News women to announce it and do p-n-p with them on the screen all the time. Otherwise, there just isn't a market for the sport in the US.

Theisman is awful. No question. But he is not even in Bill Walton's class. Not even close. The Big Red Head is certainly one of the worst of all time in any sport in any media. But the hands down worst. The absolute bottom is Stephen A. Smith. That's the end of the argument.

I can't disagree more about Wynalda. In an American soccer community that is cleaved down the middle between mindless MLS supporters and overcritical Eurosnobs, he is a figure who is respected by both groups and can provide a bridge between them. He is a passionate supporter of American soccer, but at the same time he can be honestly critical of it. He is a straight-shooter and says what he thinks, which is a great quality for an analyst to have. If you need another reason to support him, he was suspended earlier this season for saying that Jim Rome could "suck his d---" and that he wanted to "club his a--." Anyone who says that has my wholehearted support.

I didn't mind when he said what he said to Rome (who's show I never watch). By the way, there are MLS Supporters? Eurosnobs? Look, there is hooliganism in every sport in every country, so we shouldn't pick on Europe for that. I don't mind him being supportive of American Soccer, but I can't name one person who thinks there is nothing critical with American Soccer. Here are some captions from last year's world cup. http://www.p...ls-espn.html

I always hated Tommy Smyth. If he ddn't have the accent, would the average American fan consider him an "expert on anything? I always felt like he had biases toward alrger European (especially British) clubs in the Champions League. To me, he always seemed to be praising real Madrid or Man United for something, then criticising teams like bayern, PSG, or Arsenal for the same thing. And his "quaint" little sayings were horrible. Give me some Spanish speaking guy screaming "Gooooooooooooool!" instead of Smyth's talk of onion bags.

Theismann's ineligible, he doesn't have a job anymore.

Really though, the fact that theres even a discussion is damning. Theres no clear-cut guy who I'd take over the others, although I'll be unpopular and say that I think Morgan is a good color guy FOR THE GAME, because he does understand in-game tactics pretty well. Just don't let him talk about anything else.

Personally Phillips annoys me the most but I'm leaving it open to the fact that I'm biased against him due to his Mets GM tenure. Still, the guy comes off as super smug for someone who once willingly traded for Mo Vaughn.

SS Reporters, I can name you a whole group of people who don't think there is anything wrong with American soccer. The entire group of bureaucratic sycophants who run the National Team.

There is a division among American fans of the sport. There are Soccer Fans who only watch European football and think that MLS is garbage, and there are also rabid MLS fans who hate European arrogance and considers those fans elitist.

Listen to one episode of Bill Walton's podcast (if you can stand it) and tell me that he is not the worst ESPN has to offer.

define arrogance and elitist. Because if they're making fun of the MLS, they have every right in doing so. So the MLS All Stars beat Chelsea. But those guys are on tour, it's a friendly. If this were for real, Chelsea would've run those guys out of Chicago.
