Dye-in to be a Red Sox

Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe is reporting that the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox are in talks to send outfielder Jermaine Dye to Boston in exchange for outfielder Wily Mo Pena and one of either Manny Delcarmen or AA starting pitcher Justin Masterson.

I've wanted Jermaine Dye to be here ever since Kenny Williams declared the White Sox would be undergoing a firesale. He had an MVP-caliber year last year (and single-handedly carried my fantasy team, but that's beside the point), and has hit for good power since the All-Star break, something the Sox offense has been lacking. As long as he's cool with coming off the bench and platooning with JD Drew and Manny on occasion, I send Delcarmen and Pena in a heartbeat.

Pena is a no-brainer; I was surprised there was a team interested. It will be good to get rid of him. With Delcarmen, he has pitched well in the bullpen, with a few hiccups. But the Red Sox have already made it, in essence, a 7-inning game (I'm not worried about Papelbon, anyone who is is overreacting). Delcarmen has been very valuable, but I think the offense is the bigger concern for the stretch run. Plus, either Gabbard or Lester will be headed to the pen once Schilling comes back.

I don't know much about this Masterson kid, but just by looking at this, I think he's worth holding on to. Thoughts?

I agree. Why take Dye. He's 33, and probably doesn't have much left to show in his career. He wants to play everyday, and it seems like Francona prefers Drew over Pena, so Dye probably won't play a lot. The ChiSox are gonna get way too much for Dye. A pretty good minor league player, Pena, a young outfielder with a lot of potential, AND Delcarmen, a very good guy in the bullpen. The Red Sox will lose a lot right there, and won't get that much in return, especially since we have an outfield right now..

So you DISagree? An interesting point I heard this morning, if Ortiz is as banged up as he looks (he does not look like the same guy), if they get Dye, they would have the luxury of possibly DL-ing him and getting him healthy for the postseason, and having Dye DH. More importantly, if Drew goes down (a high possibility), Dye can step in. Dye is the cheapest option they have; all other teams with outfielders available (Griffey, Dunn, etc.) are going to be asking for Ellsbury, Buchholz or Lester. They get to dump Wily Mo, who, despite his potential, has been taking up space on the roster. Delcarmen will be replaced with Kase or Lester when Schill comes back.

Well, yeah. I disagree about getting Dye because of the trade they might have. I don't think we should trade any pitchers right now, unless it's Craig Hansen. The Sawx have worked hard to get their bullpen, and when it gets good, they're gonna trade them? That makes no sense to me. If it's Willy Mo for Dye, sure. Better yet, I'll just say that I like the team right now. Why do we need Dye? Just in case? No. If Drew gets injured, we can always call up Ellisbury again or have Willy Mo fill in. And what happens when Schilling is done with the Red Sox after this year? They're gonna put Lester or Kason back in the starting rotation and then what? We're stuck.

Apparently the Red Sox agree with you; the Globe now says they don't want to give up the pitcher involved and it's likely not going to happen. I can understand your point of view. You talk about the Sox pen being good and then trading it; Delcarmen is one of the many pieces that make this pen so good. There was also some discussion that the Sox were one of the top contenders for Eric Gagne, who could take Delcarmen's place, but at what price? We'll see what happens.

This deal never had a shot from the beginning. Dye has said all along that he wants to go somewhere where he is able to play everyday. He wants to do that not just because he wants to play, but because he wants to showcase himself for a new contract next year. He has not really been lights out this year. I think Ken Williams is going to respect his wishes.

All it takes to get Jermaine Dye is Willy Mo Pena! This makes me sick. Bill Stoneman should be on the phone right now!
