Dummy Hoy (William Ellsworth Hoy) was born on May 23, 1862 in Houcktown, Ohio. He made his Major League debut on April 20, 1888 for the Washington Senators. In 1888, his rookie year, he hit .274 with 2 home runs and 29 RBI. Hoy played for the Washington Senators, Buffalo Bisons, St. Louis Browns, Cincinnati Reds, Louisville Colonels and Chicago White Sox over the course of his 14 year career.

Most people believe that Dummy Hoy's best season was 1891, when he stole 59 bases, hit for a .291 average and knocked in 66 runs.
