It's been a busy few days for Duke sports. Here is a rundown of the main events:
College Basketball
Just three days after winning the Maui Invitational by defeating Marquette University Marquette, Duke steamrolled Eastern Kentucky University 78-43. Taylor King had the highest scoring game ever for a Duke player coming off the bench with 27 points in 21 minutes (breaking a record held by Luol Deng). King hit his first three 3-pointers and shot 6-11 from behind the arc overall. Duke also got 12 points from DeMarcus Nelson and 10 from Gerald Henderson.
Next, Duke faced Wisconsin as part of the ACC-Big East Challenge. Wisconsin came in ranked #20 and looked on paper like the kind of team that could give Duke trouble: a team with several big men. Duke took Wisconsin to the shed and whipped them 82-58. Most of the margin was built in a first half that was full of defensive intensity by the Blue Devils. The most amazing fact of this game is that Duke rebounded as well as the taller Badgers (40-42) and had more blocked shots (5-1). Duke also had 10 steals and forced 18 total turnovers which led to 23 points versus just 7 points of turnovers for the Badgers. Greg Paulus led Duke in scoring with 18 points as one of 5 Blue Devils in double digits. John Scheyer led Duke in rebounding with 9 to go with his 10 points.
Duke also got a commitment from Guard Elliot Williams to attend next year. He chose Duke over UVA, Tennessee and Memphis.
College Football
After 4 seasons of futility, Duke fired head coach Ted Roof. After going winless last year and managing only 1 win this season, coach Roof had to go. One can only say that his tenure at Duke has been a failure, both in the win-loss column and in recruiting. Duke is certainly a tough place to coach football, but they can do much better than they have under Roof. Any chance the ol' ball coach might want to come back?
