Duke Slater (Frederick Wayman Slater) was born on December 9, 1898 in Normal, Illinois. After going to high school at Clinton (IA), Slater attended the University of Iowa. Slater made his professional debut in the NFL in 1922 with the Rock Island Independents. He played in the NFL for 9 years, playing for the Chicago Cardinals and Rock Island Independents over the course of his 9 year NFL career.Slater also played in the AFLG for 1 year, playing for the Rock Island Independents the entire time.
