If former Blue Devil Robert Brickey weren't the coach of Shaw University, they wouldn't manage getting on the exhibition schedule. But Brickey brought his Bears into Cameron Indoor Stadium for each team's first exhibition game. Shaw never stood a chance, losing 134 to 55.
Duke opened the game with a fast attack and a furious, trapping defense. The Duke Basketball Report notes that this year's team seems much faster than last year's team. In any case, the Bears just couldn't keep up. Shaw led only once, by one point, early in the game. At one point in the second half, they were down by 79. During one 13 minute stretch in the first half, the Blue Devils outscored the Bears 48-3. With 3:30 left in the first half, the Bears still had only 8 points. Duke led at the half 68-17. As ESPN noted, Duke failed to surpass 68 points in an entire game 12 times last season. This team is capable of putting up points in bunches.
Freshmen led Duke in all major offensive categories. Kyle Singler led all scorers with 23 points on 10-11 shooting. Singler also had 5 rebounds, 3 blocked shots and a steal. DeMarcus Nelson added 17 points, and Lance Thomas and Gerald Henderson both had 15. Taylor King led Duke with 9 rebounds, and Nolan Smith led with 7 assists.
Duke's 3-point shooting was not as good as they would like (only 8 for 24), but they managed 21 offensive rebounds and shot 71% inside the arc. They also went to the charity stripe 36 times, making 28 shots (77%). All in all, Duke dominated every aspect of the game, as expected.
Shaw University was led by Jonathan Mudd and Camontae Griffin both with 11 points.
