Dropping A-bombs

Alex Rodriguez currently sits on 499 Home Runs, just one shy of the magic 500 that will all but cement his Hall of Fame candidacy at 32 years of age.  Last year's ESPN narrative was that he was the choker who couldn't handle the pressure in New York and needed to be traded ASAP.  Two thirds of a stellar season later, ESPN has changed course, and the pariah is now a prince, despite the Yankees having their worst season in over a decade.

Alex jacking them out of the park like its going out of style this season has given every ESPN anchor numerous opportunities to coin signature catch phrases, all trying to imitate Linda Cohn's epic "A-Rod" invention.  The one that appears to have stuck is that "A-Rod's" Home Run now must be referred to by all ESPN personnel as the "A-Bomb."

The Odds and Sods Research Department are twittering away countless hours in an attempt to locate the root of said phrase.  Did one person start it and have it travel through Bristol like shit through a goose?  Or, was this phrase bestowed upon the sporting universe by the ESPN overlords from their secret underground layer?  If you have any information, please let us know.

More importantly, where are the uber-creative derivatives.  Why has Ryan Howard not been hitting H-bombs?  And surely someone should have already made the "F-bomb" conncection with Prince Fielder?

Jon Sterling, who does Yankee games on the radio, calls every Alex Rodriguez home run with the phrase, "An A-Bomb from A-Rod!" Near as I can tell, that's where it started.

As far as the rest of this piece, to be fair to ESPN, the fans are largely singing the new song as well. This time a year ago, everyone in and out of New York is calling for the guy's head. This year, everyone in and out of New York is singing his praises. I wonder if part of it is resentment for Barry Bonds and the hope that A-Rod can keep this pace enough to eclipse whatever mark Barry sets. Still, it's a complete 180 and in many ways, it's unfounded.

Then again, A-Rod might not have a chance to silence his October critics ... kinda hard to deliver in the postseason clutch when your team doesn't make it to the postseason. But hey, if the Yankees do miss the playoffs, it sure as hell won't be A-Rod's fault.

Bonds was criticized for his October performance for many years as well, then he hit .471 that one time and there hasn't been much about that since.

If he's 32, maybe he can play for another 5-10 years and eclipse Bonds (should he pass Aaron...) Who would you rather the record? At least Rodriguez hasn't cheated.

I know, and there's all this controversy about how it isn't fair for Bonds to break the record, when the truth is that A-Rod will break it in 6-7 years, TOPs.

I don't feel too strongly one way or the other about A-Rod, but the persistent refences to him being some kind of a gutless choker are absurd. While A-Rod was being made out to be some sort of cartoonish loser, everyone seemed to forget that the guy is one of the most gifted baseball players in history. At least some of the focus is back on his talent.

I was just trying to make fun of the "A-bomb" phenomenon, not have a serious debate on his merits as a player, but ok.
