Dropped Pass

Kyle Boller came into the game in the 4th quarter of tonight's game to relieve Steve McNair who couldn't get the job done against what is supposed to be a well below average defense. McNair lead the team in the turnover department; 3 fumbles lost with one pick. Le'Ron McLain added a fumble of his own in which all together lost the ball six times on turnovers. Yet, some how, within the last two minutes of the game, Boller had a chance to shine. McNair seemingly took himself out after he over threw a wide open Derrick Mason out on the sideline in first down territory.

Kyle Boller threw a touchdown pass to Todd Heap on one last drive which was set up by a fumble recovery by Ed Reed (who also returned a punt for a touchdown). The 4th and goal touchdown was called back on a penalty. While gaining position, the ref missed a call; it was defensive pass interference on the Bengals, but it was called against Heap who was actually held on the play. The Ravens fail on a final attempt on a replayed 4th and goal. But... a "make-up" call was made by the same ref who missed the first play. Defensive holding gave a whole new set of downs to Kyle. On third down, under 2 minutes in the game, no time outs, Boller hits Heap with a rocket on the money, between the numbers. Just Boller's luck... it bounces of the shoulder pads of Todd, into the arms of a diving defensive lineman Michael Myers.

It didn't take long for Boller to get yet another chance to lead this Baltimore team. He has shown a great deal of persistance through the years; dealing with all the failure and critism. Baltimore as a team turned the ball over SIX times, and yet they still had a chance to win the game. I am not sure whether or not to credit the Bengals (who played very well) with the win, or credit Baltimore with losing the game. Turning the ball over that many times and still having a chance to win is either impressive or disturbing. The Bengals are supposed to have an inept defense this year, but they looked good against what was supposed to be a decent offensive unit.

All in all, the Bengals looked good defensivly... the Ravens looked like the Bears (great defense, with an offensive that hurts more than helps)... and Boller missed another oppertunity (although to no fault of his own) to take over what could be one of the best teams in the league. If I were a Bengals fan, I am exciting about what the team could do this year. If I am a Ravens fan, I would be extremly worried.

Tough finish for Ravens fans. I can't really pin this on anything but costly turnovers. If that's the story of this season, it's going to be a long year for them.

The Ravens are usually a really good team when it comes to turnover differential so I would say this game was nothing more than an abbarition.

Whatever it was, it was at the least ugly. I don't expect to see this happen again, they are (like you said) a team that thrives on take aways and doesn't turn the ball over.

So what time tomorrow does Leftwich sign with the Ravens. Before noon?

See, I thought that, but honestly, Boller didn't do awful. Todd Heap dropped that last pass. But in the same breath, they should have gotten into the endzone during that drive, and Leftwich would have been an upgrade.

I am not ready to put Boller into the kitchen already. He is still a young QB, and it wasn't really his fault they didn't score. He had to face tremendous pressure from the D, and didn't have much time to throw. He also had spent the game on the sidelines, so he never even really got a chance to get into the "flow" of the game. Boller played with emotion and poise. I am assuming McNair will be back at the helm next week. But, I do believe Boller could be a solid starter in the future for the Ravens.

From what they were saying during the game, it sounds like Baltimore is still prepared to make him the starter at the close of McNair's career. I've always liked Kyle Boller, I just felt he wasn't ready to play when last given a chance. Maybe playing second fiddle to McNair for another season or two will help him out.

I cannot disagree with that. A few years of McNair's mentoring (and maybe establishing an above average offensive line for the future) will be good for Boller.

Yeah, I just hope he gets to start before he's 30. He's been in the league for a few years now already. I'd hate to see him only get 5 quality years under center after having so much promise coming out of school.

Turnovers are the one thing the Bengals defense have been good at the past couple years -- two seasons ago, they led the NFL in takeaways. So as long as Cincy can strip the ball, the defense looks great (like tonight). But if it can't get those takeaways, this does become a below-average defense that can barely block and can't really tackle. That said, anyone think McNair might be at the beginning of the end? He's looked kinda rusty the last several games he's played (not counting preseason).

After the six turnovers in the game, I suppose it was fate that the officials would make a bad call on Heap in the endzone there. And then to cap it off with a dropped pass.. it definitely was the finish that you have when nothing goes right in one game.

That was an absolute bullet by Boller... maybe a little too much mustard on that with Heap not that far away.. but still, if you're one of the best TEs in the NFL, which Heap is, got to have that ball.

If it weren't a rocket, it woulda been picked off. There was a small window, and it was closing fast. Boller did what he had to do.

Heap hadn't turned his head all the way before the ball got there. He never saw it until it hit his chest. If Boller has to play an extended amount of time this season, I like the Bengals chances at a divisional championship.

No way does Heap catch that...now way does anyone ctach that, no more than 5 yards away you turn around and are pelted with a 100mph fastball. Not to Heap's or Boller's fault in my book, impossible to catch for heap, but also remember boller was put on the spot after sitting most of the game, i thought he performed okay
