Dream Team: I think Not!

Basketball has always been a worldwide sport. You can say basketball to any culture and they would know what you are talking about. Unlike Football, where it can be distinguished between "American" football in its uses with pigskin and "European" football in its correlation to Soccer. Basketball has reached so far and wide it's one of the Olympic sports and has been for years. Excellence at its best. One of the very few reasons I watch it. However, my interest in basketball is waning.

In 1989, the Internation Basketball Federation allowed the United States to field professional players for their team. Since the '88 Olympics had past, United States waited until the 1992 Summer Oluympics in Barcelona, Spain to gather a team called the "Dream Team". This team consisted of Michael Jordan, Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Clyde "The Glide" Drexler, Chris Mullin, Larry Bird, Scottie Pippen, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, John Stockton, Karl Malone, David Robinson, and Christian Laettner representing the college choice. Literally, this is a dream team. Each member of this team will be in the HOF if they aren't already there. You couldn't bench a better team than this.

Now, you're wondering why my interest is waning...well, every US Olympic team that follows is being called the Dream Team. SO NOT TRUE! How do you call a group of men who can't come close to the accomplishments of the men above a "Dream Team". I hope you're not going on a wing and prayer. I won't say the members of the subsequent teams won't get the accolaides of the others but for you to describe these men as a "Dream Team" is contradictory to me because you have the best players in the game now. The 1992 Dream Team were and are the best players in the game. John Stockton beat Magic Johnson's record for Assists after Johnson retired in 1991. Half the team is named in NBA's 50 Greatest Players. These men made milestones and moved mountains. The teams after that are struggling to set the record these men have set while playing in the Olympics. Are you kidding me? The 1992 Dream Team set records even in the Olympics and you want to continue to moniker every team after that the same name! It borders on blasphemy.

I think the officials, the public, or whomever came up with the name Dream Team should find a new name for the gentlemen who will roster the next teams because you are doing a great disservice to the original, never-duplicated always imitated "Dream Team", the 1992 United States Olympians.

I really think you're taking the name "Dream Team" too literal. I like this years team. Kobe's on it for the first time in like 3 world contests (I believe). The enxt gen players have all matured up and we've been so embarrased that we actual care to win in 2008. These days, with all the medical advances in our society, all the NBA palyers get surgery or medical attention in the offseason so they rehab in the summer, so they can be 100% by october. In the old days they really didn't do this. That, coupled with modern terorism are big factors for the demise of the "Dream Team"

I think the 1992 Dream Team is the greatest team in the history of sports. They may not have played all that many games together, but they achieved their goal more impressively than any other has ever achieved it goal. With that said, I'm interested to see what this latest incarnation can do. In Kobe's first international game, they won by 43 points. You don't accidentally win by 43. For a variety of factors, no team will ever match the dominance of Dream Team, but the talent on the current USA team, along with the recent embarrassments should provide some excellent motivation for this team.

I gotta agree with you there Kayos. The Dream Team is losing its name, just like everything else. Gold Glove, All Star, MVP, etc. It's a shame too. All of these names that you mentioned are just that good, but that's why they're so great. They really are a dream team.

A starting lineup of Kidd, Kobe, Lebron, 'Melo, and D-Howard or Amare. Put together a better five in the NBA and then we can argue which is better. This is the modern day dream team.

Very true. How is this not the dream team? The best centers, the best SF's, the best SG, the best PG, the PF should be Duncan or KG but Melo/Lebron isn't a bad choice either.

Agreed, I think the current team is a hell o fa collection of talent. The sleeper if I can call him that in all of this is J Kidd. A PG who loves to pass first and can then rebound is huge. Gotta have a floor general to drive the show, when you have Kobe and LJ on the court at the same time.

I'm actually asking. Can you get into the Basketball Hall of Fame based on your college career? I'm not sure of the rules for this hall of fame.

Are you sure they're still called the dream team and not just the US basketball team? Either way they put together a hell of a team this year.

I saw a headline refering to them as the "Dream Team" and I almost threw up in my mouth. But then I also heard the 04 disaster refered to with that same name. There was only one Dream Tea, and there will ever only be one Dream Team, and that was the 1992 edition that a 9 year old version of me watched steamroll through the Tournament of the Americas in Portland on their way to Olympic glory.

Dream Teams don't have to play qualification tournaments just to make the Olympics.

Sometimes I think they keep calling it the Dream Team is for international marketing purposes. Still, whenever you mention the Dream Team, everyone thinks of the 92 Olympics Team. They will still own that name until another group earns it.
