Draw for Copa America Announced

Ronaldinho is likely to star in Group B for Brazil
Ronaldinho is likely to star in Group B for Brazil

The draw for Copa America 2007 was announced yesterday in the host country of Venezuela. For those less familiar, Copa America is the top international competition in the Americas, similar to the European Championship. The 2007 edition will feature all 10 nations of CONMEBOL (South America) and the top two North America teams, Mexico and the United States, who both accepted the standing invitations they have had since 1993.

The first round should have some balanced competition, if only for its complete imbalance.

Group A

  • image:MiniBoliviaFlag.jpg Bolivia
  • Flag of Peru Peru
  • Flag of Uruguay Uruguay
  • Image:MiniVenezuelaFlag.jpg Venezuela

Group B

  • Flag of Brazil Brazil
  • Flag of Chile Chile
  • image:MiniEcuadorFlag.jpg Ecuador
  • Flag of Mexico Mexico

Group C

  • Flag of Argentina Argentina
  • image:MiniColumbiaFlag.jpg Colombia
  • Flag of Paraguay Paraguay
  • Flag of the United States United States

Let's put things into perspective here: Groups B and C each include three World Cup finalists, meanwhile Group A has only one team that came close: Uruguay, which lost on penalties to Australia. In fact, the remaining Group A teams were the bottom three of CONMEBOL qualifying for 2006. Uruguay probably has the easiest draw in the tournament. Venezuela, who has never reached the semifinals of the event, has a chance to do so on home soil, as they should qualify for the knockout rounds (1st and 2nd place along with the top two 3rd place teams) and will just need an upset in the quarters for their best result.

Group B is a fantastic group with 3 of the top 16 from the World Cup. Brazil is the obvious favorite, with Mexico and Ecuador likely to battle for 2nd place.

Argentina, the favorite of Group C, will begin play against the United States. The U.S. returns to Copa America for the first time since 1995, when they finished in fourth place. No one is this group is safe, as Paraguay has shown itself well in recent CONMEBOL play, making the last two World Cups and even beating Brazil in group play at the 2004 Copa America. Columbia may have had less impressive results, but considering that Group C's host cities are in western Venezuela, Columbian fans should be in full force.

This will be a good chance for the US to try to regain a little bit of respect after a collapse in Germany last summer. IF they go to their young and rising stars, I think they can make some noise with that group they are in, but it will interesting.

Was it a seeded draw!? Or was it an FA Cup style all in the hat together draw? If so it's a real breakdown in the seedings...

I haven't seen any word about seeding, but if it did my presumption would be Brazil, Argentina, and Venezuela may have been seeded, but no one else.

I thought that perhaps Venezuela (the hosts) would get dumped in Group A. Usually the hosts get thrown into either the first or last group. Then perhaps Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay were seeded (the next best 3)? Still, it should make for some interesting competition.

That's true. In spite of the imbalance of groups, it's usually a pretty wide-open tournament.

I have to agree with you on that Crookedcap. I think it is a very open tourney. Especially with some of the top teams having a bi-polar personality meaning they can play great at moments and horrible at others, and youre not sure which you will get

Good to see the US finally accept an invitation. However, it appears that there is going to be a conflict with the Gold Cup being held a few wks before. US is unlikely going to be able to get their best players for both tournaments and Coach Bob Bradley has gone on record saying the Gold Cup is more important. That said, it is still good to see them participating...

Look at who is in CONCACAF though. USA should only need their top players v Mexico and maybe Canada. Costa Rica and Trinidad & Tobago may give them a run too, but USA should still win. Guadeloupe are in it for crying out loud! I'd like to see a USA-Cuba match though!

It's more important to the US, because the US are more likely to win the Gold Cup than the Copa America, principally because the Copa America has decent countries in it (no disrespect to CONCACAF, but Guadeloupe hardly holds the same aura as Argentina).

It's a sentiment I've never really understood. US Soccer prefers the Gold Cup, because they'd rather gloat about an inferior trophy than a respectable finish at superior tournament. In my mind, the long-term goal should be to be able to compete on the highest levels with strong competition. Thus Copa America is bigger. If you want to do well internationally (read: actually win games at the World Cup), you have to play good teams, preferably away from the comfort of the USA.

The reason is there's more at stake- by winning the Gold Cup, the US will qualify for the Conferdations Cup in South Africa in 2009. Although I certainly agree that Copa America is certainly more lucrative from a strength of schedule perspective.

The Confederations Cup is a sideshow - participation in that doesn't really get them anywhere. It's a mini World Cup that is only used for preparation for the World Cup, but principally to make money. A Semi Final appearance at CONCACAF and a Semi Final at the Copa America is better than winning CONCACAF and going out at the group of the Copa America.

Confed Cup at least guarantees quality games, which the US are no lock to get unless they win the Gold Cup. Plus, Confed Cup is in South Africa, which is a bonus when considering that's where the World Cup will be. As for Copa America, US will be invited next time as well. And keep in mind that tourney is also a sideshow. Brazil and Argentina certainly won't field their best 11 in their games.

The difference is that Brazil and Argentina don't need to to be competitive. Their best players are probably in club football in Europe, a fate that does not behold the USA - indeed the only thing stopping them is the clash with the MLS season. In which case, MLB should either be moved to accomodate it, or they should play on without their best players (a fate that is used over here in cricket), and everyone will be happy.

It will be the latter, as it is for the World Cup
