[edit] Biography

Donnie Avery is a senior wide receiver for the University of Houston.

Avery red-shirted as a true-freshman in 2003, but did not disappoint in 2004. He started all 11 games for the Cougars and was the team's kick returner, earning All-Freshman Conference USA honors. Against Tulane, Avery hauled in a sixty yard catch, his longest of the season.

In 2005, Avery became a full-time starter; he played in all 12 games, starting ten, including the final nine of the season. In the season opener versus the University of Oregon, Avery showed why he was so highly rated out of high school, grabbing four catches for over 100 yards and a touchdown. He was consistently solid all year, and was the Cougars' top receiver against the University of Kansas in the Fort Worth Bowl, snaring five catches for 71 yards.

As a junior, with Kevin Kolb as his quarterback, Avery was second on the team in both receptions (57) and receiving yards (852) and third with five TDs. He had seven catches for 72 yards in the Liberty Bowl versus the University of South Carolina.

Even though Kolb graduated in 2006, Avery soared even higher in 2007 -- 91 catches for 1,456 yards; the yardage being good for third in the nation. In October, he absolutely torched Rice University, catching 13 passes for 346 yards and two touchdowns. Two weeks earlier, he grabbed 9 catches for 189 yards and another pair of TDs.
