Donald Driver, receiver extraordinaire for the Green Bay Packers has reportedly received an $11 million raise with his new contract extension. It is a backloaded extension with reportedly, $7.2 million contained within an added year. Driver will be 35 that year and may never see that money.
However, the new deal does raise his salary via various bonuses by about $3.8 million over the next 3 years. He is now earning about $5.75M per year.
Driver is coming off his second pro bowl in his 8 years in the league. He led the team with 92 catches for 1295 yards and 8 TDs.
Note that, over the last several years, the team refused to upgrade the contracts Mike McKenzie, Javon Walker, and most recently, Ahman Green. The fact that they gave Driver more money speaks volumes of how the coaching staff and team management feel about him.
Some interesting things about Driver, the 7th round draft choice:
- Needs 24 more TD receptions from Brett Favre to surpass the Favre-Antonio Freeman total of 57.
- Can conceivably surpass three team records:
- Sterling Sharpe's consecutive game reception record of 103
- Sharpe's career reception record of 595
- James Lofton's receiving yards record of 9,656
Congratulations are due to Driver as the Packers could do much worse than have his hard working attitude leading the young receiving corps.
He certainly has come a long way since living in that U-haul.
