Don Reese
[edit] Biography
Don Reese (Donald Francis Reese) was born on September 4, 1951 in Mobile, Alabama. After going to high school at Vigor (Mobile, AL), Reese attended Jackson State University. Reese made his professional debut in the NFL in 1974 with the Miami Dolphins. He played for the Miami Dolphins, New Orleans Saints and San Diego Chargers over the course of his 7 year career.
While most people believe that 1980 was Don Reese's best year, he is, perhaps, best known for a first person article he co-authored for Sports Illustrated magazine in 1982. In the article, he not only described his own cocaine abuse in graphic detail, but also claimed that cocaine abuse was rampant among NFL players and went so far as to identify a number of alleged users by name. Although, to this day, NFL players continue to have drug problems from time to time, Reese's article is credited with starting the NFL on the path toward implementation of a strong anti-drug program that, in time, has made great strides toward ensuring that the league and its players are drug-free.
