Don Oakes (Donald Sherman Oakes) was born on July 22, 1938 in Roanoke, Virginia. After going to high school at Andrew Lewis (Salem, VA), Oakes attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Oakes made his professional debut in the NFL in 1961 with the Philadelphia Eagles. He played in the NFL for 2 years, playing for the Philadelphia Eagles the entire time. Oakes also played in the AFL for 6 years, playing for the Boston Patriots the entire time.
