Don't underestimate the underdog

Today was a wacky day full of upsets in the NFL. It was a good reminder of the true parity in the NFL and that no game could be looked as an automatic W for the favorite. If these were trap games, then a lot of favorites fell in the hole today.
And so did I.
In the Armchair GM pick-em league, I picked the Pats to beat the Jets (although I'm a Jets fan) and gave them a 12 confidence rating. Then Eric Mangini proceeds to deliver a season-altering road win over his former mentor. I picked the Jags to beat the Texans and gave them a 16. I figured the Texans would lose their 13th straight game on the road. "David Garrard" throws 4 interceptions and the Texans pull off the upset. And I'm burned again. I picked the Falcons to beat the Cleveland Browns with a 15 confidence rating betting on the fact that Jim Mora would have them prepared after being less than prepared in their loss to the Lions. Turns out they were even less prepared then they were in the previous game and were thus burned by the Browns in a humiliating home loss. I was burned twice by this loss in particular. I made Michael Vick the starting QB on my fantasy football team figuring he would tear the Browns to pieces. Wrong on both fronts. I made Jon Kitna the starting QB on my other fantasy team. You can guess how that went.
Upsets weren't just the theme on Sunday, but on Saturday as well. Ask the Universities of California, Texas and Auburn.
I may be dead last this week in the Pick em score, but I've learned a good lesson.
