Don't Take LJ 3rd in This Year's Fantasy Draft

LT and Steven Jackson are off the board and the #3 pick is staring you in the face. LJ is the vanity pick, but not the smart pick this year:

KC's Pro Bowl running back Larry Johnson is not the smart pick at #3 for this year’s fantasy draft. Some of you may think I’ve been hanging out with Ricky Williams too much recently, but hear me out.

Larry Johnson took an absolute beating last year, registering an NFL-record 416 running attempts. Not to taking anything away from his Pro Bowl season (he was a truck last year), but he was severely over-worked. I don’t want to steal James Brown’s thunder, but Larry Johnson is now the hardest working man in the business.

Yes, he’s only 27, but everyone knows that NFL running backs age as gracefully as crack addicts. Not to mention he doesn’t have perennial All-Pros Willie Roaf and Will Shields to bulldoze linemen for him anymore. Eric Dickerson was somewhat of an anomaly. He was the epitome of great physical condition, and after 404 carries in 1986, he found success in years after, although he was aided by a strike-shortened season. On the flipside, in 1998 Falcons RB Jamal Anderson amassed 410 carries. In 1999, he blew out his knee. I’m not saying that fatigue was the sole reason for his injury, I’m saying I think it contributed. Eddie George and James Wilder also had over 400 touches in a single season and then saw their stats take a dive in the following seasons.

Also, who’s going to be the Chiefs field general? Brodie Croyle or Damon Huard? Regardless of whomever is given the nod on opening day (my money’s on Croyle), they both lack the arm strength to give the offense explosive pass plays. Thus, defense coordinators will likely stack the box and play against the run on most downs. The Chiefs have to play Minnesota, Chicago, Jacksonville, and twice play San Diego and Denver. Each of those teams ranked in the top 12 in rushing defense last year. Also, don’t sleep on Oakland, who had success on defense last season, which was one of their lone bright spots.

So where do you go at #3? I would take Brian Westbrook, who will likely be Philly’s leading rusher and receiver this year. I’m predicting a career year for Westbrook, because who else is McNabb going to throw the ball too? He should be a yardage and touchdown machine next season and rarely fumbles the ball (I really hate seeing -2 in the fantasy box score).

Westbrook is too high at 3. Go with a QB. Maybe Peyton at three. I would actually go with LJ at 2, right after LT. LJ is going to be angry this year. He plays his best when he is angry.

NEVER go with a QB at three...NEVER...your first pick needs to be a running back ALWAYS

Who made up the rule of going with a RB in the first round?? While that may be a viable option if you have one of the top 5 or 6 picks overall, at pick let's say hypathetically - 7 - what position would get you the most points - an 7th ranked RB, a top 2 WR or a #1 QB? Do the math - it'll be the QB... so guess what position I'll be drafting if I have pick 7 or later.

I've never understood this whole "pick a RB no matter what spot you have in the draft in the 1st round" - it doesn't always work...

You have your opinion and I respect that but when it comes to a draft, I'll pick the very best player overall no matter the position in the 1st round...

The question at hand is "Who would I pick at #3"... couple of thoughts on this... obviously, I would still go with LJ here... while he was a workhorse last year and defenses will be more geared on stopping him this year, he's still a very good option and wil still get plenty of TD's... but, going by your school of thought of looking elsewhere - here are a couple of options:

When it comes to RB's, there's Frank Gore, Willie Parker, Shaun Alexander, Rudi Johnson, your pick of Brian Westbrook (might run into the same problem as LJ - defenses more geared into stopping him. Who else does Philly have that teams can focus on in stopping?), Reggie Bush and Maurice Jones-Drew... while some might be questionable #3 picks, they're all still very good and could be a decent option...

Some people could also do a little thinking outside the box and go with a QB of Peyton Manning (obvious), Tom Brady (strong, accurate and now has Randy Moss as a viable #1 WR - why not pick Brady in the 1st round?), Drew Brees or even Carson Palmer...

Perhaps Westbrook will run into that problem early, but McNabb will make them pay for single coverage...again, DO NOT TAKE A QB IN THE FIRST ROUND...EVER

Frank Gore would be an option there as well...I really like the 49ers this year...jump on their bandwagon while there's still room!

I like the 49ers for a Top Ten pick this year. They had a lot of lucky games last year and are going to need to improve a lot just to keep the same record. They did add Clements, Banta-Cain, Jackson, Willis, and Staley (not too shabby) but I don't feel like it will be enough quite yet.

Last year everyone was high on LJ and Shaun Alexander with the top 2. I kept telling everyone (not here obviously) that the only guy thats guarenteed is LDT. Now while it wasn't a bold prediction, it was right, LJ and Shaun struggled while LDT broke the TD record. I will announce the guarenteed guy this year as well, but not now. It's still way too early. I will say this though, it most likely won't be LDT.

I don't know about him. Reid's body fat has spread to his brain these past few years and isn't coaching the team right. If he draws up more running plays for Westbrook, not only will it make him into one of the elite backs in the league, but it will also allow McNabb to last more than 8 games into the season.
