Don't Disrespect David Wright

(From MetsLifer.com)

I was shocked tonight when the Oakland A's intentionally walked Carlos Beltran in the bottom of the ninth with Ramon Castro on second base as the winning run.

First of all they haven't been watching Beltran swing the bat lately in clutch situations. Don't they know just throw him an Adam Wainwright curve and he's helpless?

But if you put that aside, it wasn't Carlos Delgado batting behind Beltran. It was the rock of this Mets lineup, David Wright. Sure he's young, but let's not be disrespectful.

Nothing hurts a slugger's pride more than the guy in front of him getting intentionally walked in a clutch situation. David Wright did what he does best. He slapped the ball to the opposite field with the outfield set up deep.

Ball game.

This kid is our franchise (along with Jose Reyes). How dare you not think the New York boy scout, David Wright, wouldn't come through for a team that has struggled to win a series since Memorial Day.

I guess it's just further proof that David Wright is ready and willing to put this team on his shoulders and drag them into the postseason.

David Wright is a good 3B. I, however, do not see him becoming a great 3B. He will be in the category of Scott Rolen and not Mike Schmidt.

I agree with you Christof. Wright and Rolen are very good players, all around, but when it comes to legends, there are others better than them. I think David Wright has the ability to help lead the Mets to many division titles for years to come. He's still young, but he's gonna have to work hard with the young talent that the Braves have right now. The Mets are finally deciding to win ballgames and they're coming together. This is the team that Mets fans have wanted to see for the past month...

"Did Ken Macha want that intentional walk, or did the catcher and pitcher do that on their own? Either way, it was stupid of them to do"

Do you guys even KNOW baseball? Ken Macha isn't even the manager!!! The more you guys talk, the more apparent it is that you know zip. UNINFORMED. Disrespecting Wright? One of the most UNINFORMED statements ever.

Wake up.

When David Wright hits 40 homers in a season, then Beltran will get pitched to. I agree with the guys, he's OK. There's three third baseman better than him in the NL East alone (Cabrera, Zimmerman and Chipper).

Zimmerman? ehh... Not really. His batting average is pretty bad. I'll look up the stats for both of them and show you.

yeah, Zimmerman has played one year less than David Wright. .303 career BA for Wright, Z's is .282. OBP: Wright wins, .375-.341. SLG: Wright wins .521-.466. They are roughly the same this year though, except for the fact that Zimmerman has a lower average than Wright. And Wright should be getting more RBIs since he plays for the Mets and Zimmerman plays for the Nationals. I agree with you on Cabrera and Chipper Jones though...

Not sure how Zimmerman got brought into this, but it's really hard to compare him to Wright. While I think Wright is better, Zimmerman has next to no protection in his lineup. Wright, on the other hand, is in a lineup with Reyes, Delgado, Beltran, and others. They're both solid players though, but Wright is one of the best 3b in the MLB.

Zimmerman is a very good 3b...doesn't get nearly the hype Wright does...he gets a ton of disrespect...and most will agree he's not as good as Miggy...I'd be willign to bet, you put Zimmerman in the mets lineup and he does better than wright...

Once pitchers get a mindset about certain players, they'll still walk the walk they've feared for a couple years even if that's not the one to be feared. I've noticed this in Cleveland, pitchers keep walking Hafner (having a down year) to pitch to Martinez (having a great year). Plus, Wright's young yet, hasn't shown us that he's worthy of walking constantly just yet.

They walked Beltran to set up a double play ball. If Rey Ordonez was batting in that spot, and Bonds was up next, they wouldve walked Ordonez too. It had nothing to do with Beltran or Wright.

There's no reason to set up a double play with no outs. Even if they get a double play, Castro's on 3rd.

I understand that Wright is nowhere near a hall of fame 3rd baseman but if you just look at this year's stats, he's the best the Mets have. So why walk a man to get to him? To me it just doesn't make sense.

And there's no way Ryan Zimmerman is in the same league as Chipper or Cabrera.

To add to your statement, Dmarine40, Wright was in a slump the first month of the 2007 season, so what do you think he has done to get his numbers for the last 2 months?

Also, did you see how the A's rightfielder dove for that ball? Ramon Castro is no Jose Reyes. He could've gotten in front of the ball and have the bases loaded, or an out at home.

Did Ken Macha want that intentional walk, or did the catcher and pitcher do that on their own? Either way, it was stupid of them to do

Excellent point Romiezzo. Travis Buck (the A's right fielder) had no clue who was on bsae. Castro is slower than a turtle and he could have played the ball on a hop and continued the inning.

Zimmerman does not get the respect he deserves. Keep in mind he was rookie at age 21. Of the other 3rd baseman mentioned here, the only others to make it to the bigs at that age or prior is Miguel Cabrera. Zimmerman makes some spectacular plays and his bat is very good for being in possibly the worst lineup in the Major Leagues. In a few years, he will be showing David Wright up defensively and offensively.
