Don't Call It A Comeback

Better with the bat.
Better with the bat.

Remember Rick Ankiel? Well if you don't, here is a quick reminder of what he did in his time as pitcher.

In Game 1 of the 2000 NL Division Championship between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Atlanta Braves Rick became only the second pitcher in major league history, the first in this century, to throw 5 wild pitches in an inning. In 2001 he attempted a comeback but again had control issues. He walked 25 batters and threw 5 wild pitches in 24 innings, and was sent down to AAA. Here his problems became almost cartoonish. In 4.1 innings, Ankiel walked an amazing 17 batters and threw 12 wild pitches, accumulating an ERA of 20.77.

His control problems forced him to rethink what position he would be playing if he wanted to play in the Major Leagues again. Well, it seems as if he found one. The Pacific Coast League outfield all-star has hit 32 home runs, drove in 89 RBIs and was hitting .267, including a 3 home run performance on June 16th at Iowa. In the field, Ankiel has 7 errors in 95 games and is the current HR leader in the Pacific Coast League.

Today the St. Louis Cardinals promoted Ankiel from AAA Memphis. He will bat 2nd and play right field. Talk about perseverance. I tip my hat to you Rick. Best of luck to you with your career in the outfield.

The funny part is... before his MLB debut... he was a pitching prodigy.

11-1 with an 0.47 ERA in high school. I blame the Cardinals for bringing him up too early (20).

The only problem with that thought is that he was really good in 2000, with a 3.50 ERA and a great K rate. Then something just went horribly wrong, obviously. But I don't think you can say they brought him up too soon when he was clearly a solid starting pitcher, even at age 20. Heck, if I recall he was even the NL Rookie of the Year.

Well, at least he COULD help the team playing right field. Let's see how Ankiel does. Welcome back...

It's incredible to me that someone so used to not swinging the bat can completely transform himself into an offensive player. I'll be rootin for him.

I blame his dad for being crazy....and the Cardinals for relying on him too quick.

Typically, high school pitchers are the best athletes on the team. No surprise there. It is surprising that all major league teams don't, as do the Braves, have pitchers take batting practice. Take a look at their staff averages! I love the dedication and desire Rick has shown, and the patience of the Cards to believe in him as a player. His last days on the mound for them were dismal. Did you know major league-ers as a rule don't take pre-game outfield practice throwing to the bases.

I have to agree. The Best pitcher on my highschool team was drafted by the Pirates. He made his ML debut this year...at shortstop. I have a feeling this might happen more often than we know, though, I do think it is rare for a guy to pitch in the pros and then change positions.

This is the kind of guy we should really be welcoming back. Screw Kerry Wood. Once again the Cubs have been outdone by the Cardinals.

Uhh, exactly what does Kerry Wood have to do with Ankiel? Wood was plagued with injuries while Ankiel lost all pitching control.

And I could just have easily said SCREW Ben Sheets and the Brewers but I won't. (or did I....?) :)

The big contributor in this game. 3 out of the 5 runs the Cardinals had, and they won 5-0. Pretty good start for his "comeback"...

Joel Piniero, in his second game with the Cards, actually pitched well. 7 shutout innings. Chris Young pitched against them, and it was the first time since April 26th that he has allowed over 3 runs in a game.
