Dolphins Cut Four Say Goodbye to Madison

13
Vote

The good news is that the Miami Dolphins saved $14.4 million in cap room. The bad news is that it cost the Dolphins three members of their secondary including four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Sam Madison.

Madison said early in the off-season that he would not rework his contract to stay with the Dolphins, and conceded that would probably lead to his eventual release. But in recent weeks, Madison indicated that he might be open to readjusting his deal.

The Dolphins are over the 2006 salary cap and are hurting to get under. Miami saved $2.625 million on Madison but the biggest cut was safety Tebucky Jones who will save the team $6.5 million. The third member cut loose from Miami’s secondary was fellow cornerback Reggie Howard. Letting Howard go will save Miami $1 million. The fourth player cut was offensive tackle Damion McIntosh. McIntosh started all 16 games at left tackle in 2005. His release will save Miami $2.625 million.

Just two seasons ago the Dolphins had the best pair of shutdown corners in the league with Madison and Patrick Surtain. Now they will have Will Pool and Art Thomas. There is no doubt these cuts will hurt!

Theres going to be a talent bonanza waiting for teams that have available cap room. And with so much competition, a smart GM is going to get a lot of bang for his buck this year.

@DNL: So in your opinion every team is going to cut players but no team is going to hire new players?? Awesome argumentation ;-)

About Madison and Surtain, they were only considered the best pair of shutdown corners because of the scheme Jim Bates ran. Once Saban came in their departures were inevitbale because they didn't fit his scheme
