Does the New York vs. Boston rivalry go beyond baseball?

Cup Crazy's NHL blog and ArmchairGM writer

I found this pretty funny when seeing some chatter online among baseball fans, particularly from "you know where".  This isn't a typical entry I'd write here at ArmchairGM.com. But I thought I'd see if this might draw some feedback on a curious question I have.  Ironically enough, this comes as the Boston Red Sox are pummeling the Colorado Rockies in Game 1 of the 2007 World Series.

I came across this  Boston sports blog entry and it had the author ripping WCBS-AM radio announcer Suzyn Waldman for "crying" after the New York Yankees were eliminated from the playoffs by the Cleveland Indians. There was one fan that said "f*** you Red Sox pieces of s***". Naturally Red Sox fans were not exactly sympathetic toward her.  That is the way Bostonians are these days toward New Yorkers.  Maybe that's partly why many have seen my passionate comments because of their graceful disrespect toward where I'm from. This goes beyond the Mets and Yankees versus the Red Sox in my mind, it's about the two cities, period.

Anyway, there was one post that caught my eye. Don't be fooled, I did not write it (only saying this because that person's first name is the same as mine).

QUOTE:

"The thing is, when Boston loses - as they often do - we Yankee fans don't really care much. Certainly not so much to sit around discussing Boston. We don’t really care. It’s amazing, and emblematic of your pathological fascination with the Yankees that you're even still interested in us, still dissecting our commentators, and still discussing us in blogs. You had a good year. We didn’t. We're working on it. You folks should really be focusing on the playoffs.

Let's face it, though. You people are nothing without us. You are much better suited to the underdog role, even when you have a better season than we do. You’ll have to learn how to actually feel like winners over the long term.

'04 was a remarkable year for you, but how much more mileage are you going to try to milk from it? Hopefully, you'll win it all this year so that you can start to really feel like champions and not underdogs who scraped out a great year.

I wish you the best. I will be rooting for Cleveland or a National League team but, for your sakes, I hope you win so that you can stop thinking about the Yankees. My god, even Manny, in your victory celebration in '04, held up that sign about Jeter and playing golf. Could you ever see Yankee who would do that? Who would spend a nanosecond in victory commenting on what a Red Sox member was doing? I don’t think so.

Get over us and move on.

We'll be back."

So my question is, does this sum up how this baseball rivalry between New York and Boston nowadays? Yes, I know, the Mets aren't really mentioned in any back and forth chatter on that blog entry, but even so, it makes me wonder how deep this runs between the two cities.

It absolutely does. Rangers/Bruins, Knicks/Celtics, even the Jets and Patriots have had their moments. Shoot, there was a brawl a few years ago in a St.Johns v Boston College basketball game. I'd bet some of the lesser sports have had their issues as well. The cities are so close, yet so different, its a perfect enviornment for a rivalry, and there is nothing better.

Let me tell you that I absolutely hate the Celtics, too. During Boston's last dynasty, it was quite high when they'd beat the Knicks with regularity. It never ceased when the Celtics were in their down period in recent years. I personally have no love for the Bruins either.

It does to me. I'm glad that the BoSox are better than the Yankees, this year.
