Does the NBA Want Yi Out of the All-Star Game?

21
Vote

by The Beast

On Friday, China's basketball press became infuriated when the NBA left Milwaukee Bucks rookie forward Yi Jianlian off the 2008 All Star ballot. The exclusion of Yi's name will make it much more difficult for Chinese supporters of the Bucks' forward to vote for him to start in the annual All Star Game. With Yi off the ballot, one has to wonder if the NBA does not want the rookie forward participating in the All-Star game.

So far this season, the 20-year-old rookie has certainly been impressive, averaging eleven points and 6.9 rebounds a game, while replacing Charlie Villanueva as the Bucks starter. While Yi has become the Bucks' starter, Villanueva is representing the Bucks on the ballot, despite averaging just seven points and four rebounds a game. His appearance instead of Yi's, makes one wonder if the NBA would prefer Jianlian to not make an appearance as a starter. The Chinese papers certainly believe that their is a conspiracy against Yi, as they were extremely critical of the NBA on Friday.

"The NBA does not dare to put Yi Jianlian on the ballot because the voting power of Chinese fans is too big,"

"If the NBA put Yi Jianlian on the ballot without careful consideration ... he would surely start for the East. "

"The NBA fears that if a guy like Yi becomes an All Star and only scores two points in the game, they would lose the meaning of the All Star (game)."

So, what do you think? Does the NBA want Yi off the All-Star ballot.

It's not that the NBA doesn't want him on, it's that they don't want him getting a free pass for being Chinese into the starting line up.

...or they could just restrict voting to the US and Canada.

But then they would contradict the fact that they are trying to globalize the game. Contradiction, or keeping a kid off the ballot who really doesn't deserve to be in the All-Star game and will have a good time at the Soph/Rookie game.

Then why do they have the voting? If enough people vote him in than it's fine with me. It's an exhibition anyway.

Because you have to qualify for the ballot, otherwise what's the point of voting if everyone is nominated? Ya let's have Greg Oden and Mark Madsen and Brevin Knight on the ballot too since we are being all inclusive.

and Kevin and Kelvin Cato and Michael Owlawakandi and Chris 'Birdman' Anderson, this is a ideolical issue. You can't include everyone just so no ones feelings will be hurt. Too bad Yi didn't make it, suck it up, put up 21/10 next season and force them to put you on the ballot, crybaby excuses.

Ya but each team has their five starters on the ballot. Yi is the Bucks' starter at forward. So logically, he would be on the ballot. However, Villanueva is not the Bucks' starter. Yet, he not Yi is on the ballot.

But Yi is also Rookie Game elegible he can't play in both, clearly he wouldn't make the All Star game without a massive influx of votes that had nothing to do with stats or ability, so save the trouble and put him where he belongs, in the Rookie game, it was the right decsison.

If Yi agrees to race Charles Barkley during the all star game's halftime, then his name should be added to the ballot.

If the NBA has a problem with foreign players getting voted in due to their international popularity why don't they just get rid of the idiotic fan balloting?

Now THAT'S a questions we can talk about. Do you have a 'better' suggestion Niigerian Nightmare? I would submit one but I'm fine with the current system cause my idea wasn't any better. How about you?

They could do a system like the Pro Bowl where fan voting is weighted against player/coaches/writers votes.

They shouldn't, they are trival. The Chinese are down to posion are children with lead products but 1 player is going to the rookie game instead of the All Star ballot and they cry foul. That's straight crap.

Who cares what the Chinese media thinks or does? Yi is a freshman NBA player and doesn't deserve to be on the all-star ballot. Since when did Chinese media tell the NBA what to do and how to do it. We all know Yao was voted on the all-star team his first year because of the billions of Chinese voting online. For as good as he is he should be averaging a lot more than he does both in scoring and rebounding. Slow feet and not aggressive enough and if you look at Yi a little faster afoot and a little more aggressive but he has a long way to go to be called an all-star. The minute we put the voting into the hands of the fans is hasn't been right on yet. The system for all-star selection in most of the sports is poor at best. When the players do it it is at least right on and the deserving players get picked by there peers. And as far as letting the sportswriters eta do remember Ted Williams was left off the ballot when he hit .406 by a sportswriter in Boston who for whatever reason didn't like him. The balloting is never going to be perfect but giving it back to all the players is a step in the right direction.

Maybe the title of this article should be, "Is the NBA racist?" I think David Stern better formulate an official response for this one for the NBA before things get out of hand.

From that article here are the facts. Yi is doing better than his teammate Villanueva. Yi beat out Villanueva "replacing Charlie Villanueva as the Bucks starter. " Comparing stats Yi is also better averaging 11 points, and 6.9 rebounds a game. Villanueva only averages 7 points and 4 rebounds. You're telling me it's fair that Villanueva made the ballot and not Yi? You're telling me that Villanueva got on there based on how well he's played? Then how do you explain those stats? How do you explain that Vilanueva had the starter position, but lost it to Yi.

Well, at least they don't have a player from every team represented, like MLB. Maybe

players with hard to spell names (Grudzielanek?, most of the Rockies) should get a chance to represent? Or the Olympics...why don't we have two, a 'natural' and a 'bring your chemist'?

Or we could use 'currency' value, where Canadian and European players get extra juice because of dollar weakness. The possibilities are endless. Or we could just get the best players...

Trizz, wouldn't having Yi in the freshmen game and the skills contest that weekend bring a big boost in ratings to a floundering all-star saturday night?

Doesn't each team submit a projected starting lineup to the league at the beginning of the season, and then the league chooses the best of the bunch when the ballot comes out when the time comes? Or is it not that simple?
