Does Anyone Care About Baseball or are We Waiting for Football

11

by user Jamel

I just have to ask-- does anyone really care about other sports other than football? Yeah, there is baseball, basketball, snooker :), but aren't these all sports that just get us by imbetween the football season?

Yeah, I'll go watch a baseball game- it's all good- I'll even fall asleep to a game on TV. But nothing has the excitement that football has. Hell, I can't even stay awake to get thru one baseball game but I can watch 3 football games in one freakin day!

So, I was just curious if other people are like me..... yeah, the other sports are okay but they AIN"T THE NFL!!

I didn't say it isn't the ONLY sport I'm just saying that do other people like me use other sports just to fill the void.

Like I go fishing for catfish during the offseason- that's a sport- but I would never go catfishing and miss a football game. Are going tailgating- nothing better than that-

Soccer is kind of gay-- my wife likes to play so she does that- but I'm not going to miss any football for her stupid soccer games.

I can't wait until the NFL season starts, but like CWY said, it's not the only sport. I love baseball and basketball as well, and I sometimes follow soccer since I live outta the country. And I gotta tell you, soccer ain't gay just cuz US isn't known for its players in that sport.

I wouldn't mind watching baseball games all day. On school days, I sleep at around 7:00 pm so that I don't miss a Red Sox game on the internet. It's the best I can do. Sports fanatics will do anything, and I understand that you're a football fan, but there are other things to do instead of doing the things you love most. For instance, I love baseball so much, I'd do anything for it. But I watch football and basketball, and even soccer once the offseason of baseball starts...

Also, I think this should go to the locker room.

Why should this go to the locker room??? It's about sports! What the heck???

So Romiezzo you enjoy baseball better than football?? That's all I'm trying to say. I love football- if they played ALL YEAR I wouldn't really watch any other sport- for example- if there was ANY football game on and a baseball game on at the same time and my remote control was no where to be found I would 100% every single time watch the football game- in fact if they said would you rather have all year long football but NO baseball I would be fine with that.

And yes, soccer is gay- unless you are a woman- than it's okay-

Well, you have your opinion, and I have mine, but I'm just trying to make a point. Everyone has a favorite sport, and everyone would prefer one sport over another, but we should learn to appreciate all sports. If soccer is gay, then you're saying that most countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America, where soccer is the national sport, are gay, which is not true. Soccer is popular all over the world. Even though I don't like soccer that much, I have learned to appreciate it. Even though I didn't like it and didn't play it, I've learned that other people have and many people, a lot more people than those who love football, basketball, and baseball altogether, love soccer more. I don't even like NASCAR or fishing. I don't consider them sports where you need to have to be very strategic. Now, I don't want to start any debates on whether things are sports or not, but I believe that if there is competition and entertainment involved for any group of people, then I'll have to say, yes, I appreciate what the people do as entertainers and how they put their heart and soul on things that they, as well as their fans, love...

But most of Europe is gay- and who cares about Africa?? And Asia??? I care less about them than Africa-- hell my ancestors should be looking for food and water before worrying about getting a soccer game together.

And don't worry- if I didn't respect other people's opinions I wouldn't have created this post- I'm not like Manny- I respect other's opinions

I agree with Jutmsy, football requires a lot of brain power. You have to memorize a lot of stuff and read defenses and offenses and act accordingly. Baseball is a game of reaction. Football is about preparation.

Coaches have to be smart in football, the players just have to memorize plays and assignments.

You can teach a parrot to speak phrases in different languages, does that mean it's smart?

The players have to be smarter in baseball. The game is mental. Let's be honest: If you took the dumbest football players and the dumbest baseball players - it's no contest.

There's always exceptions to every rule...

I care about baseball a lot. It's just that right now everyone is waiting for the first half of the season to finish so we can all start caring about it again. Good, so we all agree that the celebrating is destroying sports. In hockey, you would get hit in the head with a stick or in a fight. In baseball, you will get hit by a pitch if you celebrate too much or you can get spiked etc.

Football doesn't seem to have a way to stop players from celebrating and rubbing it in. E. Smith on Dallas was one of the better running backs and never rubbed it in like some players now. And i don't like Dallas, but did respect him.

As far as communist, that comment stems from the fact that the NFL made a decision to create parity in the league. With all of the revenue sharing, it has created mediocre teams and left the league with no true dynasties. I am a big fan of the Jets and know that they suck, but I still like them. And I enjoyed hating the teams that were always good, 49ers, Dallas, Giants, etc. Also, I am not a big fan of having so many teams make the playoffs. Years ago, if you were 8 - 8 or 9 - 7 you would never make the playoffs

Question: What do you call the early '00s? The Pats did amazing those years. I'd consider them dominant. 21 wins in a row (record). 3 out of 4 Superbowls during that period, I'd consider them a dominant team; I'm trying not to be biased, but that's what I think the truth is.

You're right, but most will claim its very difficult to do...IMO, its just been the adjustment...the cap has been around for...20 or 25 years and only now are teams figuring it out (Philly, NE, Denver, etc)

So why is having a lot of teams who are equal a bad thing???

Romiezzo, that is an excellent point and the only exception in the last 7 or 8 years. Maybe because some of the players decided to come back to NE for less money than they could have made as free agents? It just seems un-American to create a league with all teams being roughly equal and half of them getting into the playoffs??

Jamel, I don't like parity, I like teams that can build a dynasty because they have good players, coaches, mgmt, etc. It creates a better league overall to have that intense competition.

That's funny...NFL revenues have risen substantially since the advent of the cap - this would suggest that, while you liked the league with dynasties, many many other fans prefer this league...

I like the ANY GIVEN SUNDAY feel- I like knowing that any team could beat any team-- I hate blow outs- I hate it when I see one team who is suppose to play the other and every says it's gonna be a blow out and it is- that's boring- it's no fun-- I think it's great that the Bears could suck only a few years ago and be in the superbowl- that's exciting to me-

I hate dynasties- hate that NE was always gonna win- now if you live around there I would like it- but I live in Chicago-

AF I think most would disagree with you on this one

For the short-term, yes, you are correct the NFL is doing great. Long-term, I think the damage has already begun, too many mediocre teams, too many playoff teams ==> kinda like the NHL. But, no, it's not funny. It's sad...

Jamal, you might be right, maybe I am in the minority. I just like dynasties, I like some sportsmanship and I like an elite group to make the playoffs.

Too many mediocre teams cause all the good players are gonna get kicked out of the league!

It's not funny. It's sad.....

But you are right about one thing- the quality of these athletes I BELIEVE are going downhill- why do you think that is???

I like dynasties as well, and hope the Bears recreate one. Good coach, franchise players, loyalty... Free agency has created what you might deem "communist" with teams, but it's a sheer capitalist biz. How's that for ironic???

Yeah but the only people who like dynasties are the ones who have that dynasty team in their city. For example it was awesome when the Bulls ruled! living in chicago is was awesome- but didn't it piss off the rest of the NBA world?

so the long term is more than 25 years? Thats over a quarter of the NFL's existance...(I think?)...and revenues have gone up steadily and sharply since the cap...ssoooooo...if you think quality is truly going down (teams are more diluted, that's because of expansion...) because of the cap, then it doesn't matter to the no fun league, because they're making more money than ever...

I agree with you Ju but I'll go on the record saying there AREN'T TOO many teams in the NFL- I like the number. But I will say that I think the players aren't coming out of college as skilled as they use to- the majority of them (and yes you can list a few exceptions as always) can't really compete in the league

Long term, just about everything is going downhill. Basketball, football, hockey, meybe even soccer, I'm not sure. But there's one thing that I know: baseball isn't. Indians, Red Sox, Tigers, Yankees, Blue Jays, Braves, Mets, Phillies, etc. They all have ups and downs, which is why I love it. You never know which 8 teams are gonna make it to the playoffs. It's always a mix up now. For the past 6 years, a different team has won the playoffs (after the Yanks won back to back). The thing with baseball is you can have a very bad day and then you can have a really good day. With basketball, fooball, hockey, and soccer, you're usually the same. OK, maybe for basketball your shots are off sometimes, but other than that, I don't think there are any factors that contribute to what the game of baseball is right now. Yes, we've had dynasties, but now it's our turn for excitement I guess..

Romiezzo I think you just wrote the complete opposite of what AF did and you both like baseball- that's kind of weird.

Anyway, I hate to say this but I do think baseball is losing some steam- during the 'roid era they players were better.

So why are things going downhill? Hockey players today are WAY more skilled today than ever- even quarterbacks are better I think-

Yeah, I gotta agree with you there. Baseball is turning into WWE! OH NO!! Anyways, to answer your question about why things are going downhill is because, usually, in hockey or football game, we know who's gonna win nowadays. Although football is a great sport and is getting there when it comes to exciting playoffs (in MY opinion), I think that whenever you see two teams play, it all comes down to the talent and the coaching. If you have the best quarterback, a good defense and a good coach, you'll probably go to the Superbowl. BUT, on the other hand, I feel that in baseball, every game can be exciting. Anything can happen in a baseball game. You don't know who's gonna win, because it's not just based on talent. Sometimes, it's based on luck as well. How? Well, Albert Pujols isn't always going to have a multi homer game. Johan Santana isn't always gonna pitch great games. You have a lot more "upsets" in baseball that in any other sport, in my opinion, cuz an upset to many people is when a team that's in last place wins against a really good team, which CAN happen. In fact it happens...I don't like to say a lot, but it happens more frequently than basketball, football or hockey. That's all.

I'm not saying you are wrong Romiezzo but you are writing the EXACT opposite to AF and you are both trying to say this is why baseball is better! AF criticized the NFL for having all the teams being equal- I said that's what I like about it- ANY GIVEN SUNDAY ANY TEAM CAN WIN- you are saying the same about baseball- however, I will argue with you that isn't it basically the same teams always getting into the playoffs in baseball?? I know, you might say the same with football eventhough I would disagree with that.

Anyway, chicago sucks here so I strangely am enjoying having the blue jays play well- I don't understand it but I seem to cheer for a canadian team when chicago is out- it's like they are the underdogs since they pay their players with funny money.

Back to back world series- got to love Joe!

Yeah, baseball is great. I actually used to like football better, now I like them both. I probably like baseball more though. I am from New York Jamal, that's why I like the Jets. Chicago did have some great teams over the years in football and basketball- although not a big fan of the NBA- I like NCAA better. And as far as why the quality of players in the NFL has gone down? Good question! Not sure, maybe because they are playing other sports or less high schools have football teams cause of insurance?

I love the nfl, but I also like baseball. During the nfl offseason I will watch the nba, and mlb. And when I really want to watch football, I just watch nfl network, or I watch AFL games. The AFL isn't as exciting as the nfl, but it is still football, and it is exciting in a different kind of way.
