Dodgers acquire Hendrickson and Hall from D-Rays

10
Vote

The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired SP Mark Hendrickson and catcher Toby Hall from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for C Dioner Navarro and SP Jae Seo. Hendrickson has struggled over the past three years, posting a 5.51, 4.81, and 5.90 ERA. This year he has posted a respectable 3.81. His K/BB ratio in 51/34 in 89 2/3 IP, and his home run rate is normal. Rookie phenom Chad Billingsley will likely get sent down to the minors once Brett Tomko returns from the disabled list.

I don't get it. Seo is probably better than Hendrickson; Navarro than Bell. Why would the Dodgers do this?

Wait...I know hendrickson was probably rated higher than seo in the minors, but seo has been a better pro...and i don't know anything about hall, but navarro's a decent catcher. Someone care to explain whats up here?

I think the Dodgers are betting that hendrickson made a jump this year in his performance and will develop into a decent NL pitcher in that spacious park and away from the AL East.

I think the Dodgers are going for instant success. That team is built for immediate victory, not long-term victory. So, they're getting rid of their prospects in hopes that these guys can help them win now.

I'm at a lose here too. The Dodgers had been waiting for Navarro to get healthy again because they needed a decent option at catcher and now they trade him. Also, I agree that Seo has been the better pro.

ASwaff, you obviously know little about the Dodgers. They have a TON of prospects that are either up right now (Kemp, Billingsley, Ethier, Martin) or are going to be factors in the years to come (LaRoche, Guzman, Loney, Aybar). Navarro's good, but Russ Martin is clearly the catcher of the future, so he's expendable. The Dodgers very badly need another starting pitcher, so this deal makes perfect sense. Seo might have had good years before, but he was lost in LA, and it wasn't getting any better. To say they are ditching prospects makes no sense at all.

That's fine, but they got a catcher in return for navarro, why? I'm still not convinced hendrickson is better than seo, but i'll take your word for it...

Hall is clearly worse and arguably much worse than Navarro, especially given age considerations (Hall is 30, Navarro 22). He makes almost $2 million more per year, too. It doesn't help that Hendrickson doesn't appear to be a lot better than Seo. Plus, as was the case with the catchers, Seo is younger and makes less.

In the short term, I suppose this is a slight improvement for the Dodgers, since Hendrickson is pitching a little better than Seo right now, but I don't think it justifies taking on almost $4 million in salary and giving up one of the better young catchers in the game. Although his prospect status is not quite what it was then, it's interesting to note that Navarro was the key piece in two major deals 17 months ago (the Yankees' deal for Randy Johnson and the D-Backs' subsequent deal for Shawn Green). Surely the Dodgers could have gotten more if they were actually shopping Navarro.

If you ask me, the Dodgers were fleeced in this one, regardless of what slight improvement (if any) they may have made to the rotation.

I'll agree that Navarro has a better future than Hall. But, looking at Navarro's stats, he's 0-16 in throwing out base runners this year, and only 9-42 last year. Martin on the other hand, has thrown out 10-30 this year, in addition to hitting .301 with 33 RBI in 44 games this year. I know Navarro was a big part of trades in the past, but he hasn't yet turned out to be the player they thought he could be. I think people are overrating him. If he's so good, why was he sent back down to Triple A? He has a decent bat, so if he ever could throw out runners, then he'd be effective. But, he wasn't getting it done, and Martin is now their guy. As far as Hendrickson goes, I think they saw a guy wtih potential. This is only his 5th year in the majors, so he's got plenty more years left in him. Seo finished out the year great for the Mets last year, but he was awful this year. Just from watching him pitch, he looked completely lost, so a change of scenery might benefit him. Hendrickson has already pitched against the Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays, White Sox, A's, Rangers, and Orioles, and still has a very respectable 3.81 ERA. So while people are saying that the Dodgers did this to win now, it's true, but with Hendrickson, they could have him in the rotation for years if he keeps pitching as well as this year.
