Dwight Gooden was busted a while back driving under the influence. A month ago, he confessed to his probation officer that he had used cocaine. He'll be spending the next one year and one day behind bars for the probation violation.

Gooden was the NL Rookie of the Year in 1984 and the Cy Young winner in 1985. He pitched a no-hitter for the Yankees.

He and Keith Hernandez were my heroes growing up. How I avoided Kurt Cobain worship is beyond me.

Yeah, I didn't realize how incredible his 1985 season was until I added the stats to the article. Man, what a waste.

His 1985 season ties Roger Clemens 1997 season as the 12th best all-time in ERA+

Another great stat about his 1985 season. The Mets had a .741 winning percentage in games he started in 1985. That was the highest percentage in the league for any team with a single starter. The winning percentage for games started by anyone not named Doc was .567. That is quite a huge difference.
