Do the Raiders wish they did not draft Jamarcus Russell?

by Sports Indeed

JaMarcus Russell's holdout is now the longest for a number 1 pick since Bo Jackson held out the entire 1984 season so that he did not have to play for the Bucs (by the way: Super Bowl titles for Bo = 0, for the Bucs = 1, suck it Bo). It has been reported on profootballtalk that JaMarcus is in no hurry to get a deal done since he does not really want to play for the Raiders anyways. It is beginning to look like Russell may hold out well into the season. Even if he does report soon, he will have virtually no chance of starting this year -- the season is lost for JaMarcus and the Raiders. Seeing what has transpired do the Oakland Raiders wish they had picked someone else? Here are two interesting candidates.

Brady Quinn

Quinn held out for a bit with the Cleveland Browns so there is no guarantee he would have signed with the Raiders by now, but it certainly seems likely. The Raiders, particularly Al Davis, were higher on Russell because he had a big arm and Davis loves to throw the ball downfield. But if Lane Kiffin is installing a similar offense to the one he co-ran at USC it would seem like Brady Quinn would be a better fit. He is much more in the mold of Leinhart, who obviously excelled in this offense, than Russell is. Not only that but Quinn has looked very impressive in his first two preseason games for the Browns. If I were a Raiders exec I would definitely be wishing I took Quinn at this point.

Adrian Peterson

Daunte Culpepper has looked very good running the Raiders offense in the preseason. He does not appear to have all his pre-shredded knee mobility back, but even 75% of what he was would be pretty good. Let's not forget that just three years ago he had one of the greatest season's for a quarterback ever with Nate Burelson as his primary target. If the Raiders had Adrian Peterson in the backfield with Culpepper (as opposed to the perennially under achieving Lamont Jordan) they would be looking half-way dangerous at this point. This possibly explosive offense paired with their young talented defense would really have made them a pretty decent team. If they had drafted Peterson, they could have worked out a trade earlier for Culpepper and he would have been around for the entirety of training camp and would be running the offense much more proficiently at this point. I think this would have been the ideal (and cheaper) situation for the Raiders and they must really regret having taken the no-show Russell. PA, SportsIndeed.com

The worst part is that Brady Quinn was a better pro prospect anyway!

I completely agree with Davis here. I'll admit that Russell was a decent college QB and has some size that might translate well but whenever everything starting coming out about him being the #1 pick I was kind of surprised. Not that I think that Quinn should've been drafted first overall for any reason; but I think the Raiders were stretching a little bit going for Russell as first overall. They could've traded down to pick up whomever later on in the first round if they were that deadset on taking a QB (which they have desperately needed). Just seems like a waste of a pick at #1.

Over the last several years, teams have been unable to trade down. A trade requires a partner. No one wants to move up and assume the excessive cap hit that comes with the first (even top 5) selection. Historically, the reward does not offset the cost.

I thought so. Everyone said Russell was better than Quinn after LSU killed ND in the Sugar Bowl. But few mentioned that Russell was surrounded -- at almost every postion -- by more talent than Quinn. If Quinn had two first round wide recievers to throw to and the kind of defense LSU had I think he would have looked just as good as quinn.

Russell wasn't a very good fit for the Raiders to begin with. He's physically gifted, but raw. A QB like that needs to go to a stable organization with a veteran QB to learn from and some talent at the skill positions. Both Quinn and Peterson would have been a better fit in Oakland.

Somebody's actually paying enough attention to the Oakland Raiders to actually blog about the team's preseason? Wow, well done.

It kills me having played ball with a current Raider to have to thrash them. This is the one team I follow more than any of the others. If you were planning on offering Russel some sh^t contract worthy of a late 1st round pick, then what were you thinking? I hope you were thinking $58 million overall including $25.7 million in guaranteed money. That was Vince Young's contract in 2006.

Think there is any chance Russell sits out the whole year?

Ty, I don't disagree that Russell isn't Young. You can't argue with the fact that Russell was drafted number one. Pay the man if you want him to play. That is my stance.

What about Calvin Johnson? Every team could use a stud receiver.

The St. Louis Browns? Last I checked, the Browns played in Cleveland, the St. Louis Browns haven't been around since 1953.

First of all, props for the St. Louis Browns reference. That's old school, dog. If I was JaMarcus Russell, I wouldn't want to play for the Raiders either.
