Do the Mets really need to pick up a starting pitcher?

Rumors have circulated in the past few weeks that the Mets may be interested in Mark Buehrle, who almost certainly will be traded by the Chicago White Sox. Since I heard about the chance, I've been doing some thinking about how much the Mets really need another starting pitcher.

The question really comes down to will Pedro Martinez be ready come August 1st. It's too early for anyone to tell with Pedro.  One thing that is certain is that John Maine, Oliver Perez and Tom Glavine (hopefully back to form) are staples. I'm still not sold on Jorge Sosa. I saw him pitch in person against the Cubs and he looked flat out dominant, but his last two starts have left a lot to be desired. Then again he did dominate Detroit, arguably the best team in the AL. Maybe facing the NL will be just what the doctor ordered for Sosa, or maybe he's hit the wall and will revert to the guy who was released by 3 teams before coming to Shea.

The other big question becomes El Duque. Many point to his success out of the pen in 05 with the White Sox as a reason to believe he can do it again but I'm not so sure. In recent outings since coming off the DL, it has taken El Duque a while to get loose which is alarming because he won't have that luxury coming out of the pen in a key situation in the playoffs. If this problem continues, the Mets may have a surplus of starters and a hole in the pen.

As far as Beuhrle is concerned, I hope Omar will pass. At least at the price tag I'm hearing. I don't think this rental (he's stated he wants to sign in the midwest) is worth Fernando, Gomez, Pelfrey, Guerra or even Humber. I'd much rather a trade for an arm out of the pen giving up lower ceiling prospects (Caleb Stewart and Corey Coles types).

Bottom line, I have faith that Pedro will have the flash bulbs popping this October, his first postseason on the hill in a Mets uni and I think the only thing that will come out of these Beuhrle rumors is me learning to spell his last name right.

Dude, every team needs starting pitching. With that said, the Mets are in the middle of the pact in regards to need. The Mets are banking or Perez and Maine. Glavine gas tank is empty. And Pedro's shoulder is shot. Putting your hopes on October on Pedro's shoulder is just asking for a complete disaster to occur.

That's a very good point...you have no idea what pedro will be like when he comes back, or for that matter, how long it will take him to get into form... Glavine will, IMO, be legit for the rest of the year...Maine looks solid and I'm concerned about Perez...Hernandez too...

I disagree that Glavine's gas tank is empty. I would have agreed a week ago, but he showed on Friday that he still has something left. I wouldn't say that I would be putting all the eggs in the Pedro basket but I think if the White Sox are looking to move Beuhrle quick, I would hope Omar isn't trigger happy. I think a lot relies on how Sosa does tonight. If he pitches like he did against Minny, Omar's hand is forced toward a trade but if he gives us a Detroit performance, I say hold steady. Remember, Sele is going to the garbage bin regardless when Dave Williams comes back.

Disagree with you on both Glavine and Pedro.

Yes:
  • Because we need a guy who can eat two innings in the bullpen two or three times a series during the playoffs -- like, say, El Duque.
  • Because we need a guy who can step in if Pedro doesn't come back.
  • Because we need to move Jorge Sosa to Aaron Sele's role, and Sele to the garbage bin.

To declare something in your statement, I believe the Mets have also looked into Brad Lidge from the Mets. But like Joshkross said, it's always good to have a 6 man rotation. If one of the pitchers does decent for the Mets, you can definitely trade one of them for that one outfielder you wanted or even a better starter if Pedro doesn't do that well. Getting an all right starter is always good for the club.

I completely agree. Buerhle is not worth it. Omar has stated time and time again that he will not trade prospects for rentals. So, nothing to worry about here.

Maybe St. Clemens can pitch for the Mets at Shea on his off days from starting/relief pitching(?) for the Yankees.
