Do the Diamondbacks really want the Big Unit in their fold again?

Randy Johnson won 4 Cy Youngs, a World Series Co-MVP, and pitched a perfect game with Arizona.

MLB.com has reported that the Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Yankees are talking about the Snakes getting Randy Johnson back.

IF this deal does go down then there will be a few very important things that will happen first.

1. The Yanks will have to pay at least $6,000,000 probable more of the 16 that he is owed since the D-Backs only have 10 mil to spend.

2. The Yankees will want some top prospects, which admittedly the Snakes have quite a few of but with who they would rather not part with. The Yanks would probable want two or three close to ready pitchers and maybe a position player. The pitchers include Edgar Gonzalez, Enrique Gonzalez, Dustin Nippert, Ross Ohlendorf, Micah Owings, Dana Eveland, Evan MacLane and Juan Cruz with the position players being well a whole bunch of players.

3. Also the the Unit will have to waive his no trade clause but since he has a home in Arizona that shouldn't be much of a problem.

But more important then what would have to be done to finish the deal, is wether the deal should be done. In the trade the Diamondbacks would get a 5 time Cy Young winner who took them to the world series. They would also be getting a 43 year old warn down man who had a 5.00 ERA (it was in a much tougher division then the NL west) and is coming off of surgery that might keep him from starting the season. They would be giving up two or three potentially great pitchers and maybe a utility guy, or a bunch of minor leaguers that never get past AAA.

So the D-Backs really probable shouldn't do the deal but I can't help hoping that the Snakes will show some loyalty to a player who helped them become great and give Johnson a second chance. And who knows the prediction I made in Crystal Ball Predictions for 2007 - ArmChairGM.com Style might come true.

From what I heard the Yankees are asking any interested team to pay Johnson's entire salary. Also, with the Arizona deal, ESPN was talking about the D-Backs paying Johnson's entire salary, extending his contract for 2 more years, and offering major leaguers in the deal, not just prospects.

Maybe Chad Tracy, Conor Jackson and/or Orlando Hudson could be included as part of the package? Yanks need a 1B. Hudson could free up some of the $6 mil difference.

the D-Backs will never trade Glove Hudson as long as Brandon Webb throws that nasty sinker

I could see the Snakes giving up Chad Tracy, Conor Jackson, or maybe even Tony Clark and one of the starters I mentioned but no way in hell do they give up Hudson.

Also if Arizona gives him a contract extension I think he will have to take a pay cut.

Big Unit has nothing left. A 43 year old power pitcher coming off major back surgery. Whatever the D-Backs give up will be too much for him.

The Dbacks are not interested in picking up any part of his salary, and have also requested Johnson re-structure at least some of the $40 million in deferred money they will owe him after he retires. Because of Arizona's unwillingness to negotiate financially,(including a contract extension), the Yankees have asked for prospects in return. I have heard Chad Tracy's name mentioned, to play first base possibly but more likely as bait to land Dontrelle Willis. Two other teams are in the running, San Diego and Anaheim. The Padres and Yankees have agreed to financial terms but not player terms, and the Angels are just now throwing their hat in the ring. The Angels have money but also minor league talent out the wazoo, so it will be interesting to see how badly Arte Moreno (AZ resident) wants to pull this off. My guess is Arizona is in the talks as a push up on the other offers but aren't really a serious player, if he goes it will be to San Diego. And consider this, the new Dbacks ownership group sucks. They are clueless. And this is the same group which refused to trade Johnson to the Yankees during the season a couple years ago, instead waiting til the season had ended and costing Johnson a postseason check and possible WS appearance. Why the hell would he want to come back?

He lives in Arizona so that may be why he'd want to come back

"...in their grasp", "...on their minds", "...in the hole", "...hanging out" The Big Unit thing is really played out, especially when you consider his name is already "Randy" "Johnson"
