As of yesterday, August 3rd, there are four very close division races (within three games or less). Here is a look at the division races for the AL Central, AL West, NL Central, and NL West.
AL Central
Cleveland 62-47 - -
Detroit 61-47 .5 GB
Minnesota 55-53 6.5
Chicago 50-59 12
Kansas City 48-60 13.5
- Cleveland and Detroit are neck and neck, but don't count out the twins, this time last year the twins were third in the division, and were nine games back, and ended up winning the division. The division could have a new leader after tonight, if Cleveland loses to minnesota, and Detroit beats Chicago.
Winner of Division- Its gonna end up being Cleveland, they are on fire, and they have some hot hitters, and solid pitching, plus a very good closer in Joe Borowski.
AL West
Los Angeles 63-45 - -
Seattle 60-47 2.5 GB
Oakland 52-58 12
Texas 48-61 15.5
- LA is one of the best teams in the league, they hit for tremendous average, and they have lots of speed, tough team to beat. Seattle is 2.5 GB the angels, the mariners do have a chance at beating the angels for the division, they are great when going into the ninth with a lead, and as long as they get enough offense to get the lead they have a very good chance at winning with their closer J.J. Putz.
Winner of Division- LA, to hard to beat, and I don't think Seattle can last as long as the angels can, considering the were last place (78-84) just last year. LA will end up winning the division easily.
NL Central
Milwaukee 59-51 - -
Chicago 57-51 1 GB
St. Louis 50-56 7
Houston 48-61 10.5
Cincinnati 46-64 13
Pittsburgh 44-63 13.5
- Milwaukee started out hot, and has now cooled down, while the Chicago Cubs started horrible, and has now been on fire. This race will be close until the last day of the regular season. What I think is a bigger surprise than Milwaukee with the Division lead, is that St. Louis isn't in the middle of this division race, and are seven games behind MIlwaukee.
Winner of Division- Chicago was supposed to win the division from day one, and will win the division, barely edging one of the biggest surprises in the majors this year, in my opinion.
NL West
Arizona 61-50 - -
San Diego 58-50 1.5 GB
Los Angeles 58-51 2
Colorado 56-52 3.5
San Fran 47-60 12
- The only team not in this race is the Giants, which means this one could be the closest Division race this season. As of right now, the division leader is yet another surprise team, the Diamondbacks, who finished fifth last season (76-86). And, believe it or not, but the Rockies also have a chance to win the division, who are just 3.5 games behind with 54 games left to play.
Winner of Division- San Diego, being only 1.5 games back, the padres probably have the best pitching staff in the NL West, and possibly the entire league. They may not have much offense, but if they only give up a few runs a game, then all you got to do is score a few runs which isn't that hard, Padres will win the division.
Wild Card Race
AL
Tigers 61-47
Mariners 60-47
Yankees 59-50
Twins 55-53
- The second place finisher of the AL Central will win the wild card spot, whcih according to me will be the Tigers, the AL Central is way too strong for the wild card spot to not go to the second place finisher.
NL
Padres 58-50
Dodgers 58-51
Cubs 57-51
Phillies 57-52
- This race is alot closer, all four teams are within a game and a half, although close, it will not be one of the four teams on this list, instead the Milwaukee Brewers, who will be beat out by the Cubs for the NL Central.
