Diving At the World Cup

Being a very casual soccer fan, I will admit I rarely watch anything soccer related if it does not involve the World Cup tournament. So 2006 is the first time that I have really followed the sport since 2002.

With that said, one of the most surprising, if not disturbing, trends that I have seen at this year's world cup is the dives that some players are taking. A player bumps into another and that player rolls around on the ground like he just blew out 3 knee ligaments. A lot of these players should be nominated for an Oscar, for their acting is world class.

Also, what is the deal with carrying out the stretcher every time a guy goes down. At least check to see if he is even hurt. It truly looks stupid when you see the stretcher brought out for a guy who will walk off without even a limp 2 minutes later.

Soccer is suppose to be the biggest sport in the world. Yet, it barely registers a pulse in the United States. This will continue to occur as long as you players taking dives in the games.

Finally, the amount of yellow cards and red cards being called by FIFA refs is record setting. Can they add a pink card for the fakers and divers?

That's always been part of the game. It's lame, but when done well, it's helps players get calls.

And this is Exhibit A as to why soccer will never catch on in these United States.

Maybe we finally found work for unemployed actors...Fox reality presents: "The Next Soscar Star" They can have Mariotti and his idiotic commentary play Simon Cowell from American Idol.

They dive because they like to make it obvious to the referee that there has been a foul. Everyone this side of the pond hates it too, but it is mainly the Europeans that do it, the Brits normally complain about it. It is encouraged on the continent, whereas England traditionally are more physical - our referees allow it. E.g. There is no European equivalent of Rooney (in terms of strength).

This is no different than a kicker in the NFL, they barely get touched but fall down to get a flag thrown.

I'm throwing my support behind the pink card idea. I actually giggled reading that line.
