Disappointing Defeat for Struggling White

Jimmy White (England) suffered a defeat to Jimmy Michie (England) by 5 frames to 3. The result raises further questions about White's future in the game.
The Whirlwind and six-times World Runner-Up has slipped out of the top 16, and his provisional ranking is in a state of collapse after this defeat.
White has only won one match last year, so it would always be a two year battle to get back up to a respectable ranking.
White struggled throughout the game, and Michie took full advantage of some pressure misses by Jimmy - the story of his career. Michie underlined his superiority by making a break of 130 - something Jimmy looked uncapable of today.
This was the first event White has had to qualify for since he last fell out of the top 16 four seasons ago, but as he stormed back in to the top 16, a renaissance looked likely.
Sadly, it appears more of a last hurrah.
White remains convinced he can still play the game at the top level, if not realise his dream of becoming World Champion.
Elsewhere this afternoon, two up-and-coming youngsters squared off, as Jamie Cope (England) and Tian Pengfei (China) played. Pengfei progressed after a 5-3 win in a match of high quality. Pengfei has won three matches just to get to the main stage of the tournament, and he looks set to continue the snooker boom in China.
